Position Summary: The Office of Pupil Transportation (OPT) is dedicated to providing New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) students with safe, clean, dependable, efficient, cost-effective and prompt transportation. OPT is responsible for supporting the educational process through the provision of services which are essential for the education of the children. The Field Inspector, Transportation will be responsible for routing school aged students to and from school within a specified geographic location and will address busing service issues and assist parents, students and administrators in the provision of yellow school bus service to students. Performs related work.

Reports to: Fleet Vehicle Safety Director, Office of Pupil Transportation

Direct Reports: Quality Assurance Specialists

Key Relationships: Constant interaction with school administration and parents to resolve transportation problems of operational contingency; and will also work closely with OPT directors to effectively communicate proper procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Directs the routing and scheduling of contracted vehicles and personnel to ensure that adequate transportation services are provided for general and special education students in public and non-public schools.
  • Supervises the determination of student eligibility for reduced fare passes on contracted vehicles or public transportation. Directs the designation of specific routes and modes of transportation to be utilized by individual students.
  • Supervises field surveys to evaluate transportation operations and inspections of the physical condition of transport vehicles. Prepares detailed and comprehensive reports for the Regional Director and other stakeholders, e.g., statistics concerning the number of pupils served and resources required.
  • Prepares comprehensive reports on surveys and studies and provides recommendations to improve the efficiency of contracted and common carrier operations.
  • Assesses operations in targeted geographic locations and makes recommendations to the Regional Director to improve transportation routing.

Qualification Requirements

Minimum

  • A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of fulltime satisfactory experience in administrative or industrial management, planning of transportation or a related field, one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or
  • An associate degree from an accredited college, plus five years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, plus three years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "1" above, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

License Requirement

A motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Plus

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements, individuals must have two additional years of the experience described in "1" above

Preferred

  • Able to work well with all levels of staff and management.
  • Experience in Microsoft applications and transportation software.

Salary : $79,263 - $87,200

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
