Assist the Director of Environmental Health and Safety to provide a safe environment by the management or elimination of recognized health and safety risks for all patients, visitors, students and staff. This will be accomplished by inspection, monitoring, hazard assessment, employee involvement, accountability, hazard abatement, hazard management and meeting pertinent laws, regulations and policies. Primary functions are hazardous materials/waste management inspection, monitoring and training.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the management of hazardous material and waste (solid, chemical, medical, animal carcass) to include, but not limited to, labeling, collecting, packaging, storage, disposal, recycling and redistribution.
• Respond to NBC incidents and participate in the integration, cleanup and decon; maintain equipment and supply stock.
• Assist in confined space program to include, but not limited to, training, identifying and labeling of confined space and confined space rescue.
• Assist in the training of staff in the proper methods of hazardous materials handling, waste disposal, lock out/tag out, confined space, fire safety, gas cylinder, ergonomics.
• Assist senior technicians in environmental monitoring including air, water, soil, chemical and biological.
• Respond to Code Red calls, (Fire Alarms), fight the fire to the level of training. Assist the Fire Marshal in prevention program and maintenance of fire equipment.
• Respond to health and safety complaint calls, investigate and correct issues, if possible, or make referrals to ensure that the issue is corrected or managed to reduce the risk or hazard.
• Conduct general and laboratory safety inspections.
• Assist Senior Technician with hearing program.
• Assist in monitoring and testing of fume hoods, both Chemical fume hoods and Biosafety Cabinets.
• Assist with accident investigations.
• Assist in ergonomics program to include workstation evaluations.
• Assist in the collection and management of safety and health data to assist in the reduction of injuries and illness.
• Maintain and repair safety and health equipment, as needed.
• Assist in conducting job safety and risk assessment to identify safety hazards.
• Assigned to committees by the Director.
• Such duties, techniques and procedures deemed necessary for the operation of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety as assigned by the director or designee.
