About the Department
NYRR is one of the largest nonprofit providers of youth and community fitness programming in New York City. The Community Impact Department includes Youth Programs, Community Programs, and Youth and Community Events.
The Community Programs team oversees a diverse portfolio, including NYRR Striders for older adults, free NYRR Open Runs in city parks, and targeted initiatives such as Run for the Future and Youth Ambassadors, which build lifelong skills through movement and leadership.
The Youth Programs team develops and supports running programs and resources for schools, community organizations, and families in NYC and nationwide through Rising New York Road Runners.
The Youth and Community Events team delivers more than 40 events annually—including those tied to the Five-Borough Series and the TCS New York City Marathon—reaching thousands of kids and community participants each year.
About the Position
The Rising New York Road Runners Youth Wheelchair Training Program is a free program for youth with physical disabilities ages 6 to 21. The program offers weekly training sessions on a seasonal basis, in-school resources, and competitive events on the road and track, regardless of experience or prior NYRR affiliation. The adaptive programming specialist will be responsible for helping support the day-to-day management and administration of the program. In addition, the role will also help to create appropriate Adaptive Physical Education content for K-12 educators to incorporate into their PE lessons. The role will liaise with the Event Development and Production (ED&P) teams to ensure the needs of youth with disabilities are incorporated in the strategy, design and execution of in-person events. The role will explore, secure and nurture partnerships with like-minded organizations that can help to further support the youth AWD community.
Job Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):
- Meet weekly with co-Coaches, Full-Time Adaptive Programming Specialist, and Director of Youth Program Development regarding the direction of the program and logistics
- Support the program development team through enhancing current resources and developing new ones as needed
- Support with scheduling, administration and tracking of coaches’ hours
- Support with other administrative tasks for the Youth Wheelchair Training Program as needed
- Oversee the pre-event logistics and help support youth with disabilities on site, as needed
- Assist with communication and coordination of reasonable accommodations at youth events
- Identify, secure and activate partnerships and activities with mission-driven, like-minded organizations and agencies to further support the youth AWD community in NYC
- Help promote the program at conferences, expos and other tabling opportunities
- Transport equipment between office, practice and competition locations as needed
- Assist coaches on-site at practices, events, and trainings
Job Requirements:
Experience:
- Prior experience working with youth with physical disabilities
- Prior experience as a wheelchair racing athlete is a plus
Skills and Attributes:
- Strong communication and public speaking skills
- Excellent relationship building and relationship nurturing skills with youthandadults
- Initiative to work independently while simultaneously collaborating across teams to achieve goals
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, multi-task and meet deadlines
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse group of youth athletes with disabilities
- Provide general directions to NYRRcoaching staff during weekly practice sessions
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Teams, Powerpoint, Excel) Familiar with NYC communities across all five boroughs a plus
- Ability to work weekends or evenings
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Proficient in Spanish a plus
Other Requirements:
- Work in-person practices and races on Saturday mornings from late August to late October, and from mid-April to early June
- Work in-person weekend practices or facilitate virtual practices from early January to mid-March
- Facilitate in-person or virtual sessions as needed outside of regularly scheduled programming
- First Aid and CPR/AED certification preferred
- Represent NYRR in school, community and professional meetings and events as appropriate.
Salary: $35/hour
