Social Worker
The Central American Refugee Center (CARECEN) is a non-profit that has served the immigrant community on Long Island for four decades through legal services, community education and advocacy. We seek a Social Worker with a deep understanding of and commitment to public interest to provide critical social support services to immigrant children and families on Long Island. The Social Worker is a full time, salaried, exempt position.
Overview of the Role
The Social Worker will provide social work services to immigrants on Long Island, including but not limited to undocumented immigrants, unaccompanied minor children, and parents and guardians. The Social Worker will be an integral part of an interdisciplinary team, working closely to address the needs of the social, health and mental needs of these vulnerable immigrants. The Social Worker will also provide macro services through leading mental health support groups as well as providing internal and external training on mental health and community resources.
Primary Duties
- Facilitate Mental Health Support Groups sessions in person and/or virtually
- Complete bio-psych-social assessments for immigrant clients in need of social work services, provide case management to meet presenting needs, including, but not limited to, health, housing, education, food insecurity, and workforce development
- Conduct short-term crisis intervention and provide mental health services as needed, as well as support the clients while finding mental health resources outside the organization
- Write letters of support to Immigration and Family Court to advocate on behalf of clients or support their legal cases
- Provide internal and external training on topics such as trauma and mental health diagnoses, and other topics relevant to the immigrant community
- Supervise social work interns, if SIFI/SIPI certified. If not SIFI/SIPI certified, supervise as a task supervisor and under the supervision of the field instructor
- Attend staff meetings and case conferences, and guide on issues affecting the broader CARECEN caseload
- Work closely with other Community Programs’ teams and CARECEN’s Legal Team to support the immigrant community and participate in events as needed
- Maintain documentation on client cases and support groups, and assist with grant reporting requirements, including collecting and maintaining required data
- Support CARECEN’s Annual Fundraisers, such as the Toy Drive, Student Drive, or similar community support initiatives.
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements and Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Social Work from an accredited university
- Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). If not LMSW, the staff member must be working towards the license
- Experience working with the immigrant community
- Experience facilitating support groups and providing case management
- Knowledge of services available to the immigrant population
- Knowledge of mental health, trauma, physical illness, physical disabilities, intellectual and developmental delays
- Experience providing supervision of volunteers, interns, or case managers
- Demonstrated commitment to serving high-needs populations
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work within a team and motivate and mentor others
- Fluent in Spanish and English
Supervisor: Manager of Social Work Services
Compensation: $60,000 to $70,000 annually
Work environment: Ability to work hybrid based on hybrid work agreement based out of CARECEN’s Hempstead or Brentwood office
