BCBA- Specialized Applied Behavior Analysis School PreK-4th

Crossroads Center For Children
Schenectady, NY

Considering a BCBA Role? Ask the Questions That Really Matter.

As a BCBA, you already know the core responsibilities of the job:
behavioral intervention, behavior plan development, data analysis, staff training, and supervision. Those pieces are a given.

So what actually makes one position better than another?

When you’re evaluating your next opportunity, the right questions matter. Here’s how Crossroads Center for Children answers them, thoughtfully and transparently.

What Comes First: Compensation or Mission?

You may see postings with higher salary ranges and wonder how Crossroads compares.

The difference often comes down to organizational structure and priorities . Many for‑profit clinics are driven by billing demands and productivity metrics, where success is measured in billable hours and caseload size.

Crossroads is different.

We’re a not‑for‑profit, school‑based program , and we’re hiring a BCBA for our school program. We do not count or prioritize billable hours. Instead, we value:

  • High‑quality clinical leadership
  • Thoughtful, ethical decision‑making
  • Strong case supervision
  • Meaningful, student‑centered outcomes

Your success here isn’t tied to how many hours you bill, it’s measured by the quality of your work and the progress of the students you support.

Is There a Real Work–Life Balance?

Many BCBA roles require year‑round calendars, extended days, evenings, weekends, and limited vacation—often totaling only 10–15 days per year .

At Crossroads, sustainability is built into the role.

  • 42 paid days off per year , aligned with the school calendar (approximately 8 weeks of paid time off)
  • Snow days and two‑hour delays are also paid
  • Predictable hours: 8:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (37.5 hours/week)
  • No evenings or weekends
  • Flexibility from leadership when life happens

The salary structure reflects this significantly reduced work year. If balance, longevity, and having a life outside of work matter to you, the overall value of this position is substantial.

Are the Staff I Supervise Truly ABA‑Trained?

Supervising untrained or underprepared staff is one of the fastest paths to burnout.

At Crossroads, ABA is embedded throughout the entire school day.

  • Staff receive in‑person ABA training from BCBAs
  • Full access to an online training platform
  • Ongoing coaching, mentorship, and professional development are part of the culture
  • Treatment fidelity is expected and supported

You won’t be asked to “sell” ABA or fight for implementation. It’s the foundation of our program, and staff are prepared to implement recommendations thoughtfully and accurately.

Where Does the Team Actually Work?

While remote work has its place, school‑based ABA thrives on in‑person collaboration .

All staff work on‑site in Princetown, NY , which allows for:

  • Real‑time modeling and feedback
  • Immediate coaching and collaboration
  • Strong team relationships
  • Clear communication and consistency

Having colleagues and supervisors physically present enhances clinical effectiveness and makes the day‑to‑day work more enjoyable.

How Manageable Is the Caseload?

Large caseloads and productivity pressure are common and often unsustainable.

At Crossroads:

  • BCBAs are assigned 2–3 classrooms
  • Approximately 12–24 students total
  • Not every student requires a behavior intervention plan

This structure allows you to provide ethical, effective supervision without overload and to actually do the kind of clinical work you were trained to do.

What’s the Culture Really Like?

This is the question people often don’t ask but wish they had.

One of the most consistent things new staff share is how noticeably different Crossroads feels compared to previous positions.

Here, culture shows up in small but meaningful ways:

  • Genuine collaboration and kindness
  • Colleagues who look out for one another
  • Leaders who notice and acknowledge your work
  • Celebrating milestones, professional and personal

It might be someone making baked goods to share, brushing snow off a coworker’s car, or leadership taking the time to recognize your contributions. You won’t just be valued, you’ll feel valued.
