ABOUT COALITION FOR HISPANIC FAMILY SERVICES (CHFS):
CHFS is a community-based, family-focused organization of color providing an array of services to children and families in North Brooklyn and Western Queens. For over 35 years, CHFS has worked with vulnerable populations that include children in foster care, seriously emotionally disturbed children, youth, and families at risk of abuse and neglect. Our strength-based model also supports progressive youth development programs, family support services and community school partnerships, the provision of accessible, high-quality family focused services to families of color is central to our holistic approach of strengthening families in a culturally competent manner. ABOUT PROGRAM:
The Arts & Literacy Youth Development Program is an innovative and comprehensive afterschool and summer program addressing Brooklyn and Queens youth’s needs, ages 5 – 14, in the areas of education, creative arts, youth leadership, and health. Program activities build leadership and literacy in the widest sense of the word through creative writing, the visual arts, drama, photography, video, music, yoga, creative movement/dance, and apprenticeships for high school students. The program engages the children’s entire family through monthly family literacy workshops, parent organizing, and comprehensive services available through the agency’s other programs.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Coach plays a vital role in the Arts & Literacy Youth Development Department by supporting the delivery of high-quality sports, martial arts, yoga, and wellness programming. Whether leading structured physical activities, promoting teamwork, encouraging healthy lifestyles, or serving as a positive role model, Coaches help ensure that students are engaged, safe, and supported in their personal growth.
Coaches are collaborative team members who bring energy, flexibility, and creativity to their work. They are open to feedback on their classroom management, lesson planning, and instructional practices, and they consistently demonstrate professionalism in communication and conduct. The ideal candidate brings excellent classroom management skills; strong, sensitive, and professional communication abilities; and a clear understanding of personal and professional boundaries. Coach candidates must have a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in a related field such as physical education, wellness, youth development, or the arts, and at least 3 years of experience coaching or teaching youth. Candidates should have a culturally sensitive approach to working with diverse populations and the ability to integrate multiple disciplines—such as martial arts, yoga, sports, and wellness practices—into a youth development setting.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction & Curriculum Development
- Teach sports, martial arts, yoga, and wellness activities.
- Develop engaging lesson plans that align with literacy-based arts and health education standards.
- Incorporate wellness practices (e.g., mindfulness, movement, fitness).
- Collaborate with colleagues to design interdisciplinary learning experiences.
- Prepare youth showcases for Family Art Nights.
Student Supervision & Safety
- Supervise and ensure student safety at all times, including during field trips.
- Maintain a respectful, inclusive classroom culture.
- Track accurate attendance and student participation.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate regularly with parents about student progress.
- Refer students to Art Therapist or other support staff as needed.
- Supervise interns/assistants in classroom settings.
- Respond to emails in a timely manner (within 24 hours).
Program Support
- Support student recruitment and retention.
- Participate in agency-wide and community events.
- Attend mandatory staff trainings and professional development.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- BA/BFA in a related field (Physical Education, Arts, Wellness, or similar). Master’s preferred.
- At least 2 years of coaching, teaching, or instruction experience.
- Ability to create and document lesson plans.
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
- Experience working with diverse youth populations.
- Flexibility to occasionally work evenings/weekends.
Preferred but not required
- Bilingual-Spanish/Mandarin/French is preferred
- Working knowledge of NYC Arts Cultural Community
