Role Purpose
Sr. Scientist - Materials supports the development and improvement of Ion Exchange (IOX) materials and processes used across multiple Market Access Platform (MAP) units. As an early-career technical contributor, you will partner with cross-functional teams to design and run laboratory and pilot experiments, interpret results, and help convert learnings into reliable, production-ready process solutions. You will also help grow the IOX capability by contributing to method development and exploratory studies, and you may assist with engineered surface activities connected to Ion Exchange materials and processing.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to IOX material/process development and scale-up efforts, including technology transfer, process qualification support, and issue investigation, working under guidance from more senior technical staff.
- Execute experimental plans and generate high-quality data; organize results and perform basic-to-intermediate analysis to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
- Support capability-building work for IOX by helping evaluate new materials, process concepts, and test methods, and by summarizing findings for the broader team.
- Assist with early-stage research projects with university partners by helping define experimental needs, coordinating sample/test logistics, reviewing data and reports, and translating external learnings into internal next steps.
- Contribute, as needed, to engineered surface work related to IOX (e.g., surface modification, coatings, and interface engineering) by preparing samples, running tests, and documenting outcomes.
- Collaborate with R&D, manufacturing, quality, and equipment teams to align on test plans, communicate results, and complete assigned project deliverables.
- Maintain strong technical documentation (lab notebooks, protocols, and reports) and provide clear updates in team meetings, reviews, and presentations; follow site procedures and incorporate feedback.
Experiences/Education - Required
- Ph.D. (0–2 years), M.S. (3+ years), or Bachelor’s degree (10+ years) in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, with relevant research or industry experience.
- Practical lab or process experience (thesis, internship, co-op, or industry) in materials processing, surface engineering, separations, or other chemically driven processes; IOX experience is beneficial.
- Ability to apply fundamentals to experimental design, process characterization, and structured root-cause problem solving.
- Effective communicator who works well in multi-discipline teams and can explain technical results to different audiences.
- Comfort balancing multiple priorities, learning new tools quickly, and delivering on commitments in a dynamic environment.
- Travel up to ~25% to support project execution (e.g., manufacturing sites, suppliers, or research collaborators), as needed.
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline strongly preferred
- Graduate research, coursework, or projects related to ion exchange, separations, surface chemistry, polymer/material systems, or adjacent topics.
- Experience working with IOX, coatings, engineered surfaces, or similar materials systems (e.g., through thesis work or internships).
- Familiarity with pilot or manufacturing environments, including SOP-driven work, basic quality systems, and documentation expectations.
- Demonstrated technical contributions (e.g., publications, conference presentations, patents, or meaningful project results).
This position does not support immigration sponsorship.
The range for this position is $81,989.00 - $112,735.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
