Director, Nursing-ED Safety
Summary: This position is required to support the Safety and Leadership Structure of the Emergency Department, STAT Team and Forensic Services.
The Director position provides daily operational administration for nursing and other patient care in the Emergency Department/assigned areas at Westchester Medical Center. The Director supervises, coordinates, implements and directs ongoing administrative safety aspects of assigned service lines. The Director will recommend to the Sr. Director/Vice President of Patient Care Services those areas of clinical practice and administration requiring evaluation and change and implements nursing and other patient care programs. In the absence of the Sr. Director, incumbents are responsible for the administration of these service lines. This position differs from the Assistant Vice President of Patient Care Services in that the area of responsibility of the Director of Nursing—Nursing Services is smaller in scope. Supervision is exercised over many nursing, professional, clerical, and ancillary personnel.
Responsibilities include:
Supervises, coordinates, implements and directs the ongoing administrative aspects of assigned nursing and patient care areas with the focus of patient and staff safety at Westchester Medical Center.
Participates in evaluation of safe nursing and clinical practice through peer review.
Assists in the establishment and ongoing review of institutional standards of practice for all aspects of nursing and other safe patient care services in cooperation with established professional standards of practice
Establishes qualifications for all levels of staff in conjunction with the Vice President Hospital Nursing Service and Education.
Coordinates the implementation of nursing policies and procedures by conducting staff conferences and through directives, as needed
Assists in the development of education programs for all staff based on safety issue findings.
Provides for periodic review of staff by participating in individual evaluation conferences.
Recommends and establishes appropriate staffing patterns through ongoing evaluation of service line needs.
Investigates and evaluates data based on safety and quality metrics and makes recommendations to improve patient care services.
Principle lead in safety and quality improvement activities.
Participates in hospital and medical board committees.
Attends meetings, conferences and seminars as required.
Management and performance improvement of metrics, including, but not limited to:
Review, compliance and documentation of corrective action plans, restraints, medication scanning, at risk patient process, sepsis, sedation, stroke, trauma, falls, code gray, code blue, elopement risk, STEMI, medication scanning, behavioral health audits, animal bite, pain documentation, bedside handoff, rounding, throughput metrics. Integration with Press Ganey, Leapfrog and staff engagement.
Coverage of the Forensic team would include, but not be limited to: general program support and kit chain of custody/tracking maintenance.
Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience: 6 years of professional nursing experience, including 3 years at a supervisory level, required.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and six years of professional nursing experience, including three years at a supervisory level.
Licenses / Certifications: Possession of a valid license and current registration, issued by the New York State Department of Education, as a Registered Professional Nurse.
