About the Role, Mission or Department Overview

To help us do this essential work, the Times is hiring a Communications Associate who will play a key role in supporting the rapid response and reputation management work for The New York Times with external audiences, defending the value of its journalism, products, and people.

You will be part of an external communications team at The New York Times, supporting issues management and crisis communications for The Times as it appears in media, social media, and other commentary forums.

The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, data-savvy, have working knowledge of the media and social media landscape, and have the ability to work in high-volume information flows. You should have familiarity with social media platforms, data reporting tools, and be an execution-minded, solutions-oriented professional who can think strategically, adapt quickly, work independently, and rapidly earn credibility and trust within all levels of the organization.

This is a hybrid position based in our New York City headquarters. This position requires some prescheduled after-hours, weekend, and on-call work. You will report to the Executive Director of Media Relations and Communications.

Responsibilities:

  • Strategy and Planning Help internal and external communications colleagues design communications plans, manage issues, track data, and build after-action reports to measure success and areas for improvement.

  • Rapid Response Teamwork Support the external communications team to monitor, triage, action, and analyze public feedback about The New York Times journalism.

  • Media Relations Take part in an on-call rotation to field incoming media requests after hours and on weekends.

  • Reporting and Tools: Build and maintain email lists, track audience metrics for communications efforts. Monitor and share audience development outcomes to find successes, milestones, and unique stories to share that amplify the value of the Times and its employees internally and externally.

  • Partner Relationships and Management: Build impactful, collaborative relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence ( and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of work experience in communications, public affairs, or marketing

  • 2+ years of work experience working with digital content platforms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications or a related field

  • Experience working in a deadline-driven environment and juggling multiple tasks

  • Demonstrated passion for news, media, and journalism

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$57,000 - $70,000 USD

For roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
