Cytotechnologist - Per Diem

A Cytotechnologist in the anatomical pathology department is responsible for the accurate preparation, evaluation, and interpretation of both gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. The cytotechnologist participates in fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures to provide an immediate adequacy evaluation.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, screen and evaluate gynecologic cytology specimens by microscope using the Hologic ThinPrep system - accurately transcribe and enter results into the laboratory information system (Meditech).
  • Prepare, screen and evaluate non-gynecologic cytology specimens by microscope - accurately transcribe and enter results into the laboratory information system (Meditech).
  • Participate in ultrasound/CT guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures to confirm adequacy.
  • Maintain cytology workload and quality assurance records.
  • Responsible for accurate specimen identification, accessioning and requisitioning - maintaining specimen integrity throughout the process.
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot instrumentation.
  • Maintain a compliant environment, including adherence to all lab and hospital procedures, New York State and Joint Commission regulations, HIPAA standards, infection control and safety guidelines.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by participating in continuing education opportunities - acquire a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education per year.
  • Maintain slide/block and specimen retention systems according to department specimen management policies.
  • Process specimens for send out consultations and/or outside testing.
  • Other duties, as assigned by supervisor.


Required Skills and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in cytology or science related discipline with a certificate from an approved cytology training program.
  • Licensure: NYS Cytotechnologist license (or eligible), ASCP certification in cytotechnology (or eligible)
  • Experience: Prior cytotechnology experience preferred. Good written and oral communication skills, ability to prioritize work, strong problem solving skills and attention to detail preferred.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience: 1-2 years Cytotechnology experience preferred.


Physical Requirements:

  • Able to endure long periods of sitting at microscope; requires visual acuity and normal color perception. Able to perform light lifting, up to 40 pounds. Repetitive use of hands and standing for long periods of time is often necessary.


Location and Travel Requirements:

  • Location: Onsite - Cayuga Medical Center -101 Dates Drive, Ithaca, NY 14850
  • Shift: Per Diem, Various As Scheduled. Days/Evenings.
  • Travel: 0-10% Local Travel can be expected in this role


Pay Range Disclosure:

  • $43.50 to $49.00 per hour
