About Shrimp Welfare Project

Shrimp Welfare Project is an ACE Recommended Charity in the Effective Altruism space. Effective Altruism (EA) and the idea that sentient beings deserve consideration are the core values that our team shares. EA is a philosophical and social movement that advocates the use of evidence and reasoning to determine the most effective ways to benefit others. Learn more at effectivealtruism.org – it’s really important for us!

Our mission is to improve the welfare of billions of shrimps, in the most cost-effective way possible. To achieve this, we have the following interventions:

    • Corporate Engagement : We collaborate with global producers, seafood suppliers, and retailers to improve farming practices, especially in harvest and slaughter.
    • Farmer Engagement – India : Sustainable Shrimp Farmers of India (SSFI) promotes the best welfare-focused practices in shrimp farming. This is done through offering improved sustainability standards, technical assistance, enhanced reputation, access to training and resources, networking opportunities, and marketing support.
    • Policy & Research : SWP is actively engaged in numerous research projects, allowing us to investigate and tackle our key uncertainties. As a result, we produce reports that disseminate our findings to a wider audience.
    • Outreach: SWP team members and our advisors have authored a number of articles, given talks and appeared on podcasts which are intended to give an overview of some of the critical aspects of shrimp welfare.

How you will make a difference

Our current Communications Lead, Léa, is transitioning to a full-time role as our Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) Officer. To meet our growing capacity needs, we are seeking a dedicated Communications Lead to oversee all aspects of SWP’s messaging. In this role, you will craft and execute multi-channel strategies, refine them over time, and ensure SWP’s story reaches diverse global audiences effectively.

As the Communications Lead, you will be responsible for presenting SWPs work to a global audience of advocates and funders. Your role will include the following:

  • Craft and Execute Strategies : Design, implement, and continuously refine multi-channel communication strategies that effectively share SWP’s story and accomplishments with diverse audiences, and promotes shrimp welfare..
  • Relationship Building: You will be expected to cultivate positive working relationships within the animal advocacy movement and our industry collaborators.
  • Collaboration Across Teams: Work closely with our team, and especially our Corporate Engagement team to promote our initiatives and progress via our website, newsletter, social media channels, and conferences.
  • Enhance Media Presence: You will work with the SWP team to proactively advance the organisation’s media presence.
  • Support: Assist in serving as a SWP spokesperson at online and/or in-person events, including conferences, workshops, and other media outlets, as needed.

What we need

  • Someone who can handle the day-to-day tasks while also developing and carrying out a long-term communications strategy that supports SWP’s mission and goals.
  • Experience in social media management and growth.
  • Ability to build relationships with media outlets, influencers, and partner organisations to amplify SWP’s voice and visibility.
  • Passion for SWP’s mission.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal English communication skills.
  • Collaborative, culturally-sensitive, and a champion of global mindedness.
  • Exceptional level of attention to detail and organisation.
  • Ability to prioritise and be proactive.
  • Commitment to being a team player with a growth mindset, and is adept at finding common ground with parties with whom you may disagree.
  • Ability to travel a few times per year to participate in in-person events and conferences.

We are open to candidates who may be stronger in some areas while still developing in others. We understand that applying for a new position takes effort and want to thank you in advance for taking the time to introduce yourself. We can’t wait to meet you!

What would be a plus to have

  • Experience working with industry media.
  • Experience with some (but not necessarily all) of our communications channels (Squarespace, LinkedIn, Meta Business Suite).
  • Familiarity with basic graphic design tools (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) to create visually engaging content for social media, reports, and other digital platforms.
  • Basic understanding of SEO, Google Analytics, and online advertising to enhance website traffic and online presence.
  • Interest in expanding existing knowledge on shrimp welfare.
  • Knowledge of and alignment with the core values of Effective Altruism.
  • Fluent knowledge of Spanish is an asset, but not a requirement. Knowledge in French or German may also be considered.
  • While this role is open for global applicants, we particularly encourage candidates from LatAm or SEAsia, followed by Europe and North America to apply, but the position is not limited only to those regions. This is to improve our industry engagement.

Benefits of working at SWP

  • Recognized as one of the most effective animal orgs (ACE Recommended Charity & FarmKind Recommended Charity).
  • Our (Shr)impact is one of the most cost-effective animal causes.
  • We are well-funded and entering a pivotal phase of growth, making this an exciting opportunity to lead SWP’s communications and amplify our impact.
  • You will raise awareness of the importance of improving shrimp welfare, helping to improve the lives of billions of animals.
  • Be part of a highly skilled, driven and diverse team of passionate individuals from all over the world.
  • You will have a significant influence on the direction of the organisation as a whole.

Step 3: Final candidates will join an online interview to discuss the role in more detail and learn more about one another. Interviews to take place between February 3rd-14th.

Step 4: We expect to make an offer to the successful candidate before March 1st and we’ll let you know if this changes.

Equal opportunity

SWP is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We encourage qualified individuals to apply, regardless of ethnic background, race, sexual orientation, sex, gender identity, age, ability, etc. Please contact us at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns regarding accessibility, and we will endeavour to make adjustments throughout the process where possible.

This application form and job process was created based on the recommendations from the Inclusive Hiring Workshop series co-hosted by Animal Advocacy Careers and Scarlet Spark. Our Operations Manager, Kari Snorek, who is overseeing this hiring process, completed the 3 part series in June of 2023.

Note from [email protected]

This job may not align with everyone's definition of a "vegan job," as its focus is not on ending shrimp farming but on improving the welfare of the billions of shrimp farmed annually. Shrimp are the most farmed group of vertebrates globally, and aquaculture is the fastest-growing food sector worldwide. Some language on the initiative's website may be industry-focused and directed toward farmers. The vegan community holds diverse opinions on allocating resources to reduce animal suffering, strategies for these efforts, ideas that might attract funding, and how such initiatives could influence public perceptions of moral obligations toward animals. If you meet the qualifications, please evaluate whether this role aligns with your personal perspectives and values.
