Mister Cheeks is an all-day café and neighborhood market opening this fall in the heart of Carroll Gardens, proudly owned and operated by a local family. We're on the hunt for passionate, creative team members who love great food, warm hospitality, and serving the community as much as we do. Guests can swing by our takeout window for coffee and soft serve ice cream, or step inside to browse a thoughtfully curated spread of house-made eats including pastries, soups, sandwiches, rotisserie chicken, and seasonal salads. All of which can be enjoyed in our cozy indoor or outdoor seating—or picked up to go.

Overview

The Assistant General Manager (AGM) plays a key leadership role in the daily operations of our café, working closely with Ownership to ensure smooth service, team morale, and guest satisfaction. This person is equally comfortable jumping behind the counter, leading team pre-shift meetings, resolving operational issues, and setting the tone for warm, attentive hospitality. The AGM will support in managing people, systems, and service standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Model exceptional hospitality, service standards, feedback, and professionalism during all operating hours
• Train and mentor the front-of-house (FOH) team to uphold café values, service expectations, and operational excellence
• Coordinate FOH team schedules, breaks, and shift coverage to ensure smooth service and labor efficiency, following all NYC labor guidelines
• Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and communicative team environment rooted in accountability
• Retain talent by inspiring, providing guidance and fostering a culture of development
• Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and feedback
• Ensure consistent service quality and guest experience across all dayparts, including mornings, lunch, and weekends
• Act as the primary point of contact for guest feedback and resolve service issues with care and discretion
• Oversee opening and closing duties, cleanliness standards, and adherence to daily operational checklists
• Monitor food and beverage quality and support team efficiency, especially during peak service hours
• Assist with ordering, inventory management, and vendor coordination
• Uphold cash handling procedures and support accurate POS tracking and reporting
• Monitor labor and cost of goods in collaboration with Ownership. Execute plans to stay within budget and maximize profitability
• Support the execution of events, catering, and community-focused programming as needed
• Support additional operational needs and projects

Qualifications:

• Nice to have: You've been part of an opening team and have the make-it-happen attitude t it takes to help build something from the ground up
• Required:
• 2–3+ years of experience in a café, fast-casual, or service-focused hospitality environment
• Extensive knowledge of food and beverage industry and trends
• Prior experience in a supervisory or managerial role
• Strong communication skills and comfort with leading a team
• Calm under pressure, with excellent problem-solving and guest recovery instincts
• Experienced in NYC Department of Health standards and safety protocols
• NYC Food Handler’s Certificate required

Health & Safety

• Ensure compliance with all health and safety standards, including food safety, sanitation, and workplace hygiene, in line with NYC Department of Health guidelines
• Teach and enforce Food Sanitation and Safety standards

Work Environment

• Involves standing and walking the entire shift
• Requires using hands to perform daily tasks
• Involves frequent reaching, bending, and lifting
• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly during the shift

• Proposed Operating Hours of business: Mon-Sat 8am-7pm; Sun 8am-5pm

• May include extra hours and working weekends, events, additional hours, or holidays as needed
