The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.

The Styles desk is looking for an experienced and ambitious journalist to cover emerging political styles. This beat focuses on the communities, figures, emerging ideologies and media structures that have risen out of a loosely-connected web of young influencers, activists, pundits, streamers, trolls, bloggers, new media platforms, and political organizations which have long operated on the margins of mainstream culture. It will tell a story about the ways in which the internet, political stagnation, social dysfunction, dimming economic futures and generational anxieties have collided to reshuffle our existing political order.

This is an in-office position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities

  • You will have an eye for the new: What is going to happen soon in the culture? Who are the people pushing those changes, and where are they coming from? How do they express themselves online and offline?
  • You will highlight the way the online right has steadily built an alternative cultural ecosystem, where extreme political thought, taboo cultural opinions and conspiratorial thinking are the norm.
  • You will come armed with lots of story ideas, and will write frequently.
  • You will collaborate with editors, fellow reporters on Styles, and across desks at the paper.
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Styles Desk.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience as a reporter.
  • Experience writing long-lead, thoughtful profiles as well as quick-turnaround scene report or news analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience as a graceful stylist and a resourceful reporter.
  • Impeccable journalistic ethics and the ability to report critically and fairly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Deep contacts in worlds like tech, politics, or finance.

To apply, please submit a résumé, cover letter and five work samples.

This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
