Broad Function

The Continuing Education & Workforce Innovation Department is seeking a skilled and student-focused Noncredit HVAC Instructor to deliver high-quality workforce training in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC). This position supports short-term, career-focused programs designed to prepare students for entry-level employment and industry certification in the HVAC field.

This is a part-time, non-benefited instructional position reporting to the Director of Continuing Education & Workforce Innovation or designee.

The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on industry experience, a commitment to adult learners, and the ability to teach both theoretical concepts and practical lab skills aligned with industry standards and safety regulations. The instructor will support workforce development initiatives that align with regional employer demand and may contribute to the development of stackable credential pathways.

Major Responsibilities
  • Deliver in-person noncredit HVAC courses, including foundational and advanced topics, in accordance with approved course outlines and workforce competencies.
  • Teach core HVAC principles including: Refrigeration fundamentals, Electrical systems and controls, Heating systems (gas, electric, heat pumps), Air conditioning systems, Troubleshooting and diagnostics, Preventive maintenance procedures, EPA Section 608 exam preparation, Basic blueprint reading and interpretation related to HVAC systems, Safe handling of refrigerants and environmental compliance standards.
  • Provide hands-on instruction in lab settings using industry-standard tools and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA safety standards and proper lab safety procedures, modeling and enforcing safe workplace behaviors consistent with industry expectations.
  • Develop and update lesson plans, course outlines, and instructional materials aligned with local and regional workforce needs and employer demand.
  • Assess student performance through practical demonstrations, written assessments, and skills evaluations.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, grading, and course documentation records, and submit required documentation in a timely manner in accordance with Continuing Education policies.
  • Support students in preparing for industry-recognized certifications and employment, and provide informal career guidance and connections to employment resources when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with Continuing Education staff to improve program offerings, participate in program review and continuous improvement efforts, and maintain alignment with local employer demand.
  • Maintain classroom and lab equipment in coordination with program staff and report equipment repair or replacement needs in a timely manner.
Required Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional HVAC field experience.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HVAC systems, troubleshooting practices, and industry safety standards.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Educational Requirements
  • Prior teaching or training experience (college, technical school, apprenticeship, or industry training).
  • Additional industry certifications (e.g., NATE, HVAC Excellence).
  • Associate degree or higher in HVAC, Mechanical Technology, or related field.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
  • Experience working with workforce development or adult education programs.
Work Schedule

Courses are typically offered evenings and/or weekends to accommodate working adults. Schedule will vary based on enrollment and program needs. Course delivery format may include multi-week evening sessions or accelerated bootcamp models.

Compensation

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. Compensation is determined based on qualifications, experience, enrollment, and available Continuing Education budget resources. This is a non-benefited, part-time instructional position.
