Middle School Program Coordinator/ Manager

ORGANIZATIONAL BACKGROUND

South Bronx United Inc. (SBU) is a sports-based youth development organization that uses soccer as a tool for social change aiming to help youth build character, teamwork, and leadership so they can succeed in high school, college, careers, their community and beyond. SBU serves more than 1,900 young people annually through programming on the field and in the classroom, working to unite a diverse group of students, families, and the South Bronx community toward positive goals. SCOPE

South Bronx United seeks a dynamic and engaging educator to join our team as the full-time Middle School Program Manager or Coordinator. This person will serve as a key staff member of the SBU Academy, a comprehensive and longitudinal program serving more than 200 youth annually, grades 5-12. The Academy program is guided by SBU’s Student-Athlete Pathway, a cohesive program design that outlines scaffolded, target outcomes for each grade level in academic skills, high school and college preparation, social emotional learning, and competitive soccer. The staff memberr manages all programming and works individually with students in grades 5-8, collaborating with our High School and College Access Program Managers to ensure vertically aligned programming. The core responsibilities include curriculum implementation, individual academic advising, training and managing coach mentors and academic mentors, and managing partnerships and events that contribute to a positive student experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develop and Implement Educational Curriculum

• Implement program curriculum for grades 5-8 that supports student-athletes in meeting grade-level benchmarks needed to work toward acceptance to high performing, best-fit high schools
• Create intentional and data-informed student groups and academic mentor assignments for all academic sessions
• Collaborate with key staff to establish and maintain program procedures and policies
• Facilitate all summer academic programming sessions
• Manage on-site programming to ensure consistent, high-quality delivery of services - including classroom and behavior management

2. Advise and manage academic support for 70-90 students

• Collect and track student academic data (report cards, school platforms, MySchools Accounts, internal assessments)
• Under the guidance of Director of Academic Programs, analyze academic data to implement tiered programming
• Implement a structured, tiered plan for individual academic advising for all 5-8th grade students to ensure SBU is up to date on their academic standing in school
• Complete individual student and guardian meetings for all 8th grade students to support them through the high school application process
• Collaborate with schools and families to best support students individually

3. Train and manage academic mentors, summer program teachers, and coach-mentors

• Collaborate with Academy staff to facilitate orientation and ongoing training for all volunteer academic mentors, education interns, and summer program staff
• Managing and supporting all academic mentors and education interns during academic programming
• Manage the effective sharing of all lesson plans and materials with academic mentors and interns in a timely manner
• Screen and hire all summer program teachers and interns
• Oversee the planning and implementation of summer courses and serve as an instructional coach
• Facilitate weekly meetings with the head coach-mentors of all middle-school aged teams

4. Coordinate special projects, events, and partnerships

• Serve as liaison with organization’s education partners and networks
• Coordinate and facilitate special student events
• Support the implementation of annual organization events

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Candidates should meet the following requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree, experience navigating education systems
• Commitment/connection to the SBU mission and the South Bronx community, effective in culturally-sustaining approach to our work in a systematically marginalized community
• Relationship building and engagement skills: Can connect with students and families, balance of accountability and support with all stakeholders.
• Highly organized, motivated, and detail-oriented: Manages high work volume, strong systems of personal organization and ability to implement systems and procedures
• Experience with report card reviews and knowledgeable about the NYC high school application process
• At least three years' experience working in educational or youth settings
• Spanish language proficiency (preferred)

TIME

Full-time, with after school and evening hours.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

• The starting annual salary range for this position is $50,000-65,000, commensurate with skills and experience.
