Duties Description Fish and Wildlife Technicians perform a variety of technical assignments to support the management of New York State fish, wildlife, marine and ecological resources. The general duties of a Fish & Wildlife Technician 2 in Marine Resources are to carry out activities that promote the protection, management, and restoration of New York State's marine species and these species' habitats. The specific function of this position is to help collect and process fisheries data for diadromous species in the Hudson and Delaware Rivers, which involves both field and office duties. Field responsibilities include but are not limited to:-towing boats with trucks and piloting boats during sampling events-deploying and retrieving fish sampling/monitoring gears (crab pots, large seines, gill nets, electrofishing equipment, fish detection equipment (receivers) etc.)-diadromous fish and sample processing, and collection of environmental and water quality data-fishery-dependent data collection and coordination with commercial fishers -participation in outreach events-data collection in variable weather conditions (cold, warm, rain) during early morning and late evening hoursOffice responsibilities include but are not limited to: -scheduling, maintenance, construction, and inventory of sampling gear, boats, boat engines, trucks and trailers-data entry and database QA/QC-aging of fish scales, otoliths, and other hard parts used for fisheries management-processing and dissection of fish and other specimens-correspondence with the public and collaborators-assistance with report preparation materials and data summaries-participation in meetings and working groups In both field and office settings, the selected candidate(s) will supervise, train, and delegate tasks to seasonal technicians, coordinate progress with special long-term projects, and assist with unit staff coordination and communication with other DEC bureaus to accomplish unit objectives.
Minimum Qualifications Three years of experience in fisheries, wildlife, or marine resources management; fish or wildlife propagation; a living marine resources program; or a fish, wildlife, or marine research program. Substitution: one year of college coursework including at least 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources, wildlife management, or a related field, may substitute for one year of the experience described. Preferred Qualifications:Strong communication, situational awareness, and problem-solving capabilities, as well as team-oriented work planning and time management.Experience using large seines and other fishing gears in the tidal Hudson River.Experience identifying adult and juvenile fish of the Hudson River. Boat handling on a tidal river.
Additional Comments This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/2027. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.Must be able to work in remote areas.Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
