Who You’ll Work With

The Director, Institutional Giving will ultimately report to the Vice President, Investor Relations. While that search is underway, the Development team is reporting to the President, who provides strategic oversight and leadership for the function. During this transition period, the Chief of Staff serves as the administrative lead for the team, ensuring priorities remain aligned, workflows continue to move forward, and cross-functional coordination is seamless.

The Director, Institutional Giving is the senior leader responsible for the overall strategy, performance, and operations of Echoing Green’s institutional giving vertical. This role serves as the primary owner of the foundation and corporate fundraising portfolio and is a key member of the Development leadership team.

The Director works closely with the President, Chief of Staff, Development team members, Finance, and Programs to advance Echoing Green’s five-year strategic plan and strengthen the organization’s institutional fundraising engine.

What You’ll Do

Institutional Giving Strategy

  • Own and lead the overall for Echoing Green’s institutional giving portfolio ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and long-term fundraising goals.
  • Translate strategic objectives into clear annual plans, targets, and operating processes for the institutional portfolio
  • Monitor portfolio performance and proactively identify opportunities for growth, risk mitigation, and diversification.

Portfolio Oversight and Management

  • Build, manage, and steward a portfolio of 75+ foundation and corporate donors and prospects.
  • Design and execute cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies that increase engagement, retention, and giving levels.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Echoing Green, representing the organization with funders and external stakeholders.
  • Guide cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies to increase engagement, retention, and multi-year support.
  • Ensure strong prospect strategy, moves management discipline, and effective donor engagement across the portfolio.

Grant writing, reporting and Strategic Analysis

  • Own the institutional grant lifecycle from end to end, including prospect research, proposal development, budget alignment, submission, reporting, and renewal strategy, with minimal administrative support.
  • Independently draft, manage, and submit high-quality, compelling proposals and reports, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and on-time delivery across a complex portfolio of funders.
  • Lead cross-functional coordination with Programs, Finance, and Development Operations to gather inputs, align budgets, track deliverables, and ensure compliance with funder requirements.
  • Maintain oversight of reporting calendars, deadlines, and documentation, proactively managing timelines and follow-ups without dedicated administrative support.
  • Translate funding performance data and portfolio analysis into clear insights and strategic recommendations to inform leadership decision-making and institutional fundraising strategy.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Manage a Senior Associate of Institutional Giving
  • Build departmental capacity by strengthening systems, workflows, and shared practices across the team.

Cross-Team Collaboration and Development Operations

  • Serve as a thought partner to the Vice President, Development on fundraising strategy, departmental structure, and cross-vertical alignment.
  • Lead and contribute to cross-Development initiatives that strengthen overall fundraising effectiveness.
  • Represent Echoing Green externally at funder meetings, events, and convenings, as needed.

Requirements

What You’ll Bring

  • Institutional Fundraising Expertise - At least seven years of progressive nonprofit fundraising experience, with a strong track record securing and stewarding five-, six-, and seven-figure foundation and corporate grants.
  • Strategic Relationship Management - Proven ability to build and sustain trusted partnerships with foundation program officers and corporate leaders, positioning organizational strategy in alignment with funder priorities.
  • Grant Portfolio Leadership - Demonstrated success managing a complex institutional portfolio, including prospecting, proposal development, reporting, renewals, and stewardship, while maintaining clear systems and meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Team Leadership - Experience managing team members and partnering effectively with Programs, Finance, and senior leadership to advance fundraising strategy and organizational goals.
  • Analytical & Strategic Thinking - Ability to interpret pipeline and revenue data, translate insights into action, and contribute to long-term portfolio growth and sustainability.
  • Technical Proficiency - Experience using Salesforce or similar CRM systems, strong Excel skills for forecasting and analysis, and comfort developing executive-ready materials in PowerPoint or similar tools.
  • Executive Communication - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including crafting compelling proposals, reports, and executive-level presentations.
  • Judgment & Integrity - High ethical standards, discretion, and sound judgment in managing funder relationships and confidential information.
  • Mission & Equity Alignment - Alignment with Echoing Green’s mission and values, with a demonstrated commitment to equity in fundraising strategy and partnerships.
  • Social Innovation Ecosystem Knowledge (Preferred) - Knowledge of the early-stage social entrepreneurship ecosystem and the role intermediaries play in identifying, supporting, and scaling leaders. Familiarity with philanthropic and catalytic capital approaches preferred.

Base Salary: $155,000/year

Location

This role is open to candidates based anywhere in the U.S., provided they are available to work full-time on Eastern Time (New York business hours) to ensure alignment with colleagues and partners. Candidates based in New York City are expected to work in the office at least two days per week to support collaboration, shared learning, and community-building.

This role requires occasional domestic travel (up to two times per year) to cultivate and steward partnerships.
