Director of Communications
A New York City Council Member, representing District 49, is seeking a dynamic, media savvy Director of Communications to drive all aspects of the Office’s communications development, strategy, and execution. Working closely with the Council Member, the Communications Director will also create, edit, and manage content for various online platforms, websites, blogs, and social media. We’re looking for candidates with a keen sense of New York City’s media landscape, strong writing skills, and a deep understanding of the city and state’s political climate.
SALARY RANGE:
$60,000 to $75,000
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create and execute communications strategy and media plans, in conjunction with the Council Member, Chief of Staff, Legislative & Budget Director, and Community Liaisons.
- Develop and execute overall communications strategy for the leader/campaign/caucus.
- Serve as primary spokesperson, build relationships with reporters, pitch stories, and respond to inquiries.
- Oversee websites, social media updates, and website copy, creating multimedia assets like graphics and videos. Search engine optimization (SEO): Optimizing content with relevant keywords to improve search engine visibility.
- Supervise communications staff, consultants, and manage budgets/planning.
- Coordinate with allies, partners, and internal teams.
- Develop responses to urgent issues and manage all press.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or 3+ years’ experience in public service and/or related fields.
- Proficient with MS Office, social media platforms and databases
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to translate complex legislative issues into digestible, compelling content.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced political environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to working well with co-workers, while ensuring a collaborative, supportive, and inclusive workplace.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
New York City residency required within 90 days of appointment.
