College & Career Success Counselor

Organization: Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) is a thriving youth development organization - the first to combine the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating to help girls transform their lives and grow in confidence, leadership and academic achievement. Our award-winning afterschool and summer programs provide girls ages 6 to 18 from low-income communities with access to innovative education and health and wellness services that help them reach their fullest potential. Our vision is for every student, regardless of socio-economic background, to acquire the foundational academic, social and leadership skills to achieve her dreams.

Position Overview:  We are seeking a dynamic, knowledgeable, and engaging  College & Career Success Counselor to design and lead a high-impact, future-ready learning experience for our high school students (grades 9–12) in our  I Can Excel  afterschool program. Reporting to the Vice President of Education and Leadership Development, the Counselor will inspire and equip girls with 21st-century skills, help them explore college and career pathways, and build a strong foundation for success in high school, college, and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and facilitate weekly 2 1/2-hour interactive workshops for high school students, incorporating college access, career exploration, financial literacy, and real-world skills
  • Integrate 21st-century competencies such as digital fluency, creative problem-solving, public speaking, teamwork, and self-advocacy
  • Guide students through the college preparation process, including goal setting, course planning, college search, application strategies, and financial aid awareness
  • Expose students to a wide range of career options through guest speakers, panels, and project-based learning
  • Maintain a warm, inclusive, and affirming learning environment that supports students’ identities and aspirations
  • Track attendance, student engagement, and collect feedback to inform continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with FSH program staff and guest facilitators to align efforts and maximize impact
  • Plan parent workshops centered around goals, post-secondary options, financial aid and more
  • Search, coordinate and present opportunities such as internships, scholarship and volunteering
  • Availability to commit to in person (on site) Wednesday afternoons (flexible) throughout the academic year (October – May)
  • 20-25 hours per week hybrid
  • Teach classes if needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in related field (psychology, sociology, education); master’s degree in school counseling preferred
  • Knowledge of counseling youth
  • 3- 5 years of experience working directly with high school students in college and career readiness and youth development programming
  • Strong knowledge of the college admissions process, financial aid, and pathways to post-secondary success
  • Ability to design and facilitate culturally responsive, student-centered, interactive programming
  • Passion for mentoring girls in underserved communities
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Preferred

  • Familiarity with NYC DOE systems and college access landscape
  • Experience using digital tools like Outlook, Naviance, or Scoir
  • Background in entrepreneurship, creative industries, STEM, or financial literacy is a plus
