Visiting Assistant Professor (American Literature)

Hamilton College
New York, NY

Hamilton College: Hamilton College Faculty

Description:

The Literature and Creative Writing Department at Hamilton College invites applications for a one-year visiting position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning July 1, 2026. We seek candidates to teach American Literature, and we especially welcome those with expertise in Indigenous Studies, Environmental Studies, and/or Intermedia work. We are seeking applicants who can demonstrate their experience in teaching or working with broadly diverse student populations while contributing to a vibrant learning community that values academic freedom, creativity, and intellectual curiosity. Your cover letter should address the ways in which you would enhance the educational experience of students and further the College's educational goals .

The Literature and Creative Writing Department offers innovative concentrations and minors in creative writing and literatures composed in or translated into English, across temporal and geographical categories. The department, one of the College's largest, consists of 14 tenured and pre-tenure faculty, who teach and do scholarly and creative work in a wide variety of genres, fields, and forms. We take a broad, intermedial view of literary and cultural inquiry; many of us pursue comparative and interdisciplinary work-engaging, for example, book history, critical media studies, philosophy and intellectual history, sound studies, translation studies, or visual culture studies-from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Because we are a department that both studies and creates literature, we require students within both majors to do work in creative practice as well as literary and cultural analysis. More information about the department, its faculty, and programs can be found at this link .

Candidates with ABD in English or Comparative Literature will be considered, although candidates with a Ph.D. in English or Comparative Literature are preferred. The teaching load for this position is two courses in the fall and three in the spring. The expected 9-month base salary range for this position is $77,900 to $80,400. Candidates should submit a cover letter and c.v. via interfolio at . Questions regarding the search may be directed to Benjamin Widiss, Search Committee Chair, at [email protected] . Our review of applications will begin on April 17, 2026.
