Maintenance Technician
SUMMARY OF DUTIES
The Consulate General of Canada in New York is looking to fill two anticipatory Maintenance Technician positions. One role is indeterminate (full-time) and the other role is a term (full-time) contract for nine (9) months, with the possibility of extension.
Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of Corporate Services, the Maintenance Technician provides general maintenance and repair services across mission properties, including the Chancery, Official Residences, and commercial properties managed by the Government of Canada in New York. The incumbent performs hands-on work in areas such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general mechanical systems, and supports preventative maintenance activities to ensure the safe and efficient operation of facilities. The role includes troubleshooting and responding to maintenance requests, assisting with maintenance projects, preparing basic scopes of work and cost estimates, and coordinating with contractors to ensure work is completed according to required standards.The Maintenance Technician is also responsible for maintaining tools, equipment, and materials, supporting property operations (including moves and event setups), and ensuring compliance with health and safety requirements.
This selection process may also be used to create a pool of qualified candidates to staff similar positions (indeterminate, term, or temporary) that may arise following this selection process.
AREA OF SELECTION

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
All essential qualifications will be assessed. Methods of assessments and screening of candidates may include but are not limited to: verification of credentials, resume and letters of presentation; interviews, exams and practical tests; presentations or other types of assessments.
Education
This position requires:
- Completion of high school (secondary school) or an equivalent certification such as a GED.
Note: Candidates will be required to provide proof of their education
Language
The following languages and proficiency levels are required for this job. Candidates will be formally assessed or requested to provide proof of certification on these levels.
- An intermediate proficiency level (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in English.
Experience
In order to perform the duties relevant to this job, the following experience is required.
- Minimum three years’ recent* hands-on progressive experience in repairing, troubleshooting, remodeling and maintenance in one or more of the following areas: electrical, plumbing, carpentry/painting, and installing equipment/household appliances;
- Recent* experience preparing scopes of work and cost estimates for maintenance or repair projects;
- Recent* experience in use of hand and power tools involved in carpentry and masonry repairs/construction;
- Recent* experience in purchasing, handling, and maintaining tools, materials, and supplies;
- Recent as defined in the last 8 years.
Competencies
All competencies will be assessed. All competencies must be met prior to appointment.
- Knowledge of general maintenance practices, including mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, basic HVAC and electrical repairs, and preventative maintenance
- Knowledge of hand and power tools and their safe operation
- Knowledge of installation and maintenance of household or building equipment
- Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety practices
- Ability to prepare basic scopes of work for repairs and maintenance

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the asset qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.
- Certification from a recognized trade or technical school;
- Ability to communicate in French (oral and written).
OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Operational requirements will be assessed on a ``meet/does not meet`` basis and can be used to determine right fit of a candidate for the position.
- Hours of Work: Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with Locally-Engaged Staff regulations of 40 hours per week.
- Location of work: Work is performed on-site at the Chancery, Official Residences and Staff Quarters. There are limited opportunities for remote working.
- Occasional overtime, including evenings and weekends, may be required with advance notice.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50 lbs).
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position. They are to be maintained throughout the employment period.
- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
