About the West Campus House Syste

As part of Student and Campus Life, the West Campus House System offers a living and learning experience for sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Cornell University and is charged with bringing students and faculty together in a spirit of inquiry and active citizenship. Each House in the West Campus House System is overseen by a House Professor-Dean, a tenured faculty member, who is the leader of the House community and provides intellectual and social direction for the House. The House Professor-Dean works in close partnership with the House Assistant Dean, a student affairs professional who directs the multiple functions of the House and shares responsibility with the House Professor-Dean for the realization of House's educational mission and for maintaining the welfare of the House community.

The Opportunity

As the Administrative Coordinator for Carl Becker House, you will play a pivotal role in our leadership team, overseeing the House Office and all administrative processes. Carl Becker House is part of the dynamic West Campus House System, and we are dedicated to fostering a supportive and enriching environment for our residents, faculty, and staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage all administrative and logistical aspects of the role, taking the initiative to enhance House operations and community.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate 8 to 12 student workers. Act as a role model and mentor, connecting the work done to the mission of the West Campus House System.
  • Provide administrative support for the House Professor/Dean, House Assistant Dean, including calendaring, meeting coordination, room reservations, and travel arrangements.
  • Support communications with regards to House programs and initiatives, including mail functions, websites, listservs, directories, publicity, social media, and weekly newsletter.
  • Support planning and execution of House events and programing, facilitating these activities with various vendors, both internal and external to the university.
  • Act as the first point of contact to the Carl Becker House and addressing inquiries over phone, email, and walk-in visitors.
  • Take on financial responsibilities in areas including general accounting and purchasing/procurement, as well as assisting with the House budget reports, deposits, and reconciling the program account funds.
  • Support and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously, ensuring efficient and timely completion of administrative processes.
  • Serve as a resource and role model for house office student staff and residents of Becker House, contributing to their development and success.
  • Contribute to annual initiatives that have a positive impact on all five Houses within the West Campus House System.

What We Need

All applicants must include a resume and cover letter for full consideration.

  • Associate Degree and 2 or more years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and related work experience.
  • Excellent communication (written and oral), interpersonal, problem solving, multitasking, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, resolve problems using sound judgment, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and MS Outlook.
  • Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it's ok if you don't.

  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience with software, including: Workday, StarRez (residential management tool), graphic design (Adobe, Canva, or something similar), website updating (Drupal, WordPress), social media (marketing and program support).
  • Experience working with budgets. Experience with Cornell procurement and accounting systems is a plus.
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting AV equipment.
