Senior Accountant

StaffBuffalo is excited to partner with a long-established, family-owned horticulture organization in Lancaster, NY, to hire a dependable and hands-on Senior Accountant, offering $70,000–$75,000 annually. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who enjoys a structured, in-person work environment, is comfortable with manual processes, and wants to make a meaningful impact within a close-knit, multi-entity organization.

This role will support the Controller with day-to-day accounting functions across multiple operating locations and entities. The Senior Accountant will work heavily within an ERP system, manage core general ledger responsibilities, and assist with financial reporting, sales tax, property tax, and insurance-related tasks. The ideal candidate is personable, reliable, and willing to jump in wherever needed — including answering phones and assisting customers during busy periods.

Responsibilities

• Perform general ledger accounting, including reconciliations, reporting, and month-end/year-end close support (9/30 fiscal year-end)
• Run financial, operational, and sales reports from the ERP system
• Prepare and file multi-state sales tax returns; assist with Canadian entities as needed
• Manage property tax payments, insurance renewals, and non-operational accounting tasks
• Complete manual bank reconciliations and maintain organized, paper-based documentation
• Support accounting needs across multiple business entities and locations
• Answer phones and provide customer support during peak periods
• Assist landscapers and retail visitors at the front counter as needed
• Work closely with family ownership and contribute to a respectful, collaborative office culture
• Opportunity to oversee front office staff and assist with hiring and mentoring clerical support

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
• 2–5+ years of accounting experience with strong foundational GL knowledge
• Comfortable working in a manual, paper-heavy accounting environment
• Strong communication skills and willingness to assist customers and internal staff
• Reliable, detail-oriented, and adaptable within a family-business setting
• Tech-savvy mindset and interest in process improvement is a plus
  

Work Environment & Schedule

• Fully in-office role in Lancaster, NY
• Standard hours: 8:00am–5:00pm, with a 30-minute lunch
• Busy season: March–June
• Slower season begins July 1
• Business casual attire (no jeans or athletic wear)
