Surgical Suite Equipment Commissioning Specialist
Ready to turn wrenches that save lives?
Every successful operation depends on expertly installed, tested, and documented equipment. Join STERIS as a Commissioning Specialist and make world-class care possible from day one.
Why this role matters
- Direct impact: Your work ensures patients receive safe, high-quality care the moment equipment goes live.
- Scale and stability: STERIS is a ~$5B global healthcare leader with ~17,000 associates (4,000+ in the field), growing organically and through acquisition.
- Career mobility: Advance across U.S. regions or internationally with robust training and development.
Where you’ll go
- Primary territory: NYC, Manhattan, most of Long Island, and Northern New Jersey (as needed).
- Company vehicle for frequent day trips, plus periodic Monday–Friday travel with likely overnights.
- Some weekend work (not more than two weekends per month); hours flex to customer schedules; overtime is common but not guaranteed.
- Exposure to diverse projects across multiple hospital systems and, at times, other states.
What you’ll tackle
- Coordinate with the Installation Project Manager to lock in dates aligned to deliveries and construction timelines.
- Confirm site readiness—rough-ins, utilities, and transport paths (doorways, elevators, corridors) match spec.
- Uncrate, assemble, position, level, connect utilities, and commission STERIS sterilizers, lights/booms, and related systems.
- Execute functional testing and capture all service documentation electronically.
- Leave it spotless: remove crates/packaging, wipe equipment, and address final customer questions.
Must-haves
- HS diploma/GED and 5+ years recent mechanical experience in construction or HVAC install/repair; OR Associate’s in Electronics/Mechanical (or similar) plus 1+ year related mechanical experience.
- Ability to travel extensively and work flexible hours based on customer needs.
- Strong troubleshooting, Windows proficiency, and clear customer communication.
- Valid driver’s license; clean driving record.
Nice-to-haves
- Plumbing and electrical experience (strongly preferred).
- Commercial plumbing and pipefitting background.
- Electrical schematic and blueprint reading.
- Machine building/assembly experience.
- OSHA 10-Hour certification.
Compensation & benefits
- Competitive base salary plus a 15% differential tied to total hours worked each pay period.
- Overtime opportunities; annual merit review and incentive plans.
- Company vehicle, fuel, and maintenance covered.
- Company credit card, iPhone, and laptop; all business travel expenses paid.
- Uniforms and all necessary tools supplied.
- Medical, vision, prescription, dental, and life insurance.
- 401(k) with company match; paid vacation and holidays.
- Hands-on training and development; tuition assistance.
- Parental leave/adoption assistance; advancement opportunities.
Success profile
- Customer-first mindset and professional communication.
- Hands-on mechanical aptitude with a safety focus.
- Comfort navigating hospitals, construction sites, and changing priorities.
