Communications Director
Summary Description
The Communications Director leads the planning and execution of effective internal and external communications for the church and community. This role partners closely with church and ministry leaders to communicate vision and priorities across graphic design, social media, website, app, and other marketing platforms.
As part of the Creative Department, the Communications Director oversees all marketing and communications efforts and manages the church’s CRM system (Planning Center) to support communication, engagement, and operational needs.
Role & Responsibilities
Main Ministry Duties
- Lead all promotional and marketing efforts for the church across social media, email, text, print, website, and app platforms
- Oversee the timely development and execution of creative requests and church initiatives
- Establish, maintain, and improve communications policies, procedures, and brand guidelines
- Manage the church’s CRM (Planning Center), including policies, system setup, and staff training
- Provide cost estimates and strategic marketing recommendations for ministry initiatives
- Implement systems and processes to improve efficiency and communications support
- Manage and develop the Communications Team
- Delegate work to the Communications Coordinator and Graphic Designer
- Communicate Bethlehem’s vision and values to staff and volunteer teams
- Lead weekly Communications Team meetings and participate in weekly all-staff meetings

Planning Center Administration & Database Management
- Serve as primary administrator for Planning Center modules (People, Groups, Registrations, Calendar)
- Create and manage groups across ministries, volunteer teams, classes, and informational purposes
- Build and manage event registrations, including forms and automations
- Grant and manage user access and permissions
- Ensure consistency and accuracy of all public-facing group and registration content
- Maintain and manage the staff-only Planning Center calendar
- Support database troubleshooting and record management
Strategic Communications Leadership
- Develop and oversee comprehensive internal and external communications strategies
- Lead multi-channel communications across social media, website, app, email, print, and signage
- Manage communications request workflow (intake, prioritization, delegation, quality control)
- Ensure all communications align with brand standards and church values
- Provide strategic guidance and cost estimates for campaigns and initiatives
- Consistently convey the vision and values of the church through all channels
Social Media Management & Volunteer Leadership
- Supervise the Communications Coordinator in daily social media operations
- Review and approve content calendars to ensure alignment with messaging and strategy
- Track and analyze performance using platform analytics, Google Analytics, and Rella
- Share insights and recommendations with Executive Pastor and leadership
- Set goals and KPIs for social media efforts and volunteers
- Lead volunteer social media team meetings
- Manage paid advertising strategy and budget
- Ensure brand consistency across all campus and ministry accounts
- Develop and support SEO strategy across digital platforms
Team Leadership & Development
- Supervise and develop the Communications Coordinator, Graphic Designer, and volunteer leaders
- Delegate creative work effectively across the team
- Foster a collaborative, values-centered team culture
- Conduct weekly Communications Team meetings
- Participate in weekly all-staff meetings
Cross-Departmental Collaboration
- Meet regularly with pastoral staff and Creative Arts to align messaging for sermon series and major initiatives
- Collaborate on Sunday service elements (stage design, video announcements, promotions)
- Partner with ministry leaders to translate vision into clear, effective communications
Special Projects & Events
- Lead promotional campaigns for special events, sermon series, and church-wide initiatives
- Coordinate multi-channel marketing strategies for major programs
- Support additional projects as assigned
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Requirements
- High School diploma or GED
- Minimum of 2 years of administrative or professional experience
- Strong professionalism and tact when working with pastoral staff, ministry leaders, volunteers, and the church community
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
- Excellent attention to detail
Skills
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, Wix, Subsplash, and related tools
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with ability to multitask and prioritize
- Helpful, cheerful, diplomatic, and servant-hearted approach
Physical Demands
- Work performed while standing, sitting, and/or walking
- Ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing
- Ability to use hands for grasping and fine manipulation
- Ability to bend, squat, crawl, climb, and reach
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 30 lbs.
