The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Under the direction of the Principal Laboratory Animal Caretaker the Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker provides direct animal care as well as technical, and administrative assistance in support of the overall operations of the two campus locations that house laboratory animals. The incumbent will act in the care and treatment of laboratory animals and will support the operation and maintenance of facility equipment.

Minimum Qualifications Reassignment/Transfer: Current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as a Senior Laboratory Animal Caretaker (G-8).Provisional/NCP: Current New York State Department of Health employee with one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as a Laboratory Animal Caretaker (G-5).NY HELPS Non-competitive: Either 1: one year of full-time experience as a laboratory animal caretaker in a research facility including but not limited to hospitals, universities, institutions, or laboratories;Or 2: two years of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting;Or 3: 15 or more college semester credit hours* in veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, veterinary technology, or animal science** AND 18 months of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting;Or 4: 30 or more college semester credit hours* in veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, veterinary technology, or animal science** AND one year of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting;Or 5: certification as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or higher by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science AND one year of full-time experience in the handling and care of live vertebrate animals in other than a residential setting.*You must provide a list of courses you have successfully completed, including the name of the college or university, course title, number of semester credit hours per course, grade, and date received either by listing them on a separate sheet of paper or by attaching a copy of your college transcript. If you are applying online, you must provide this information in the space provided.**College semester credit hours in other fields will NOT be substituted in lieu of the specific specialized fields of study listed above.Preferred Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree or an Associate's degree in veterinary technology, biological sciences, or a related field; experience with the use of laboratory mice in a research setting; a New York State Veterinary Technician license and/or AALAS certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG); and familiarity with basic science and animal husbandry. Employees must have one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent, competitive service as Laboratory Animal Caretaker (G-5). In addition, the agency, also at its discretion, has the option under Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law to limit consideration to only DOH promotional candidates serving in the direct-line lower-level title of Laboratory Animal Caretaker for NCP nomination. If certified by Civil Service, mandatory reemployment list candidates must be considered first for appointment to this title. Candidates applying under this qualification must not have either failed to pass, or failed (if qualified) to apply for, the last examination for this title, #38-977, held on September 23, 2024.This position is part of the NYS HELPS program.
