Job Title: Emergency Department Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Emergency Duration: 14 Weeks Shift: Day/Night Rotation Hours per Shift: 12 Hours Experience: One-year acute hospital experience as a registered professional nurse License: Current RN Licensure Certifications: BLS, ACLS, PALS, Stroke Certification Must-Have: Two years of experience in the Emergency Department Description: The Emergency Department Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The ED RN assesses patient needs, identifies urgent or emergent care priorities, and collaboratively provides direct care. The ED RN applies appropriate interventions and evaluates patient progress. The ED RN demonstrates skill in the use of various invasive and non-invasive procedures, treatments, and therapeutic interventions to manage life-threatening and routine emergency situations. The ED RN utilizes principles of relationship-based care to alleviate anxiety, provide information, and address pain, discomfort, and safety. He/She assesses the physiological, psychosocial, emotional, and cultural needs of patients of all age groups, their families, and support systems as appropriate. The ED RN connects with patients and families during triage and identifies the initial management of patients of all age groups. The RN assigns priority of care according to Triage Standards. The ED RN establishes rapport with patients and families, addresses comfort needs, listens carefully, assesses nonverbal communication, and provides frequent updates. The ED RN conveys and gathers information concisely and accurately. The ED RN conducts primary assessments of critical need and detects major deviations from norms for all age groups within acceptable time frames. He/She identifies necessary steps and interventions required using direct observation, patient/family interviews, EMS reports, and data for secondary assessments. The ED RN identifies contributing factors, health history, and events preceding emergent health events. He/She assesses the psychosocial needs of each individual, including family dynamics, and reports any suspicion of domestic violence or abuse. The ED RN reassesses the patient to identify response to treatment and/or changes in condition, responding appropriately. The RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. He/She teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with individual education, training, and scope of practice. The ED RN understands the personal responsibility to safeguard public safety through compliance with infection prevention strategies. The ED RN prepares the patient, parent, or family for diagnostic procedures and treatments. He/She makes appropriate referrals for post-emergency care and teaches the patient what is needed for continuing care at home. The ED RN assesses patient/family learning styles and structures education sessions to maximize understanding. He/She asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in education and discharge instructions. The RN seeks to understand what is most important to the patient/family, acknowledging them as the central focus of all care and services. The ED RN embraces the importance of creating a healing environment as a key element of professional nursing practice. He/She keeps patients and significant others informed of the process of care, anticipating needs. The ED RN maintains awareness of the patient's condition throughout the visit.
