Director of counseling
Elmira College is a private liberal arts College located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Elmira College was the first college to offer a comprehensive curriculum for women, and is home of the Center for Mark Twain Studies. We are seeking a of Director of Counseling and Wellbeing (DCW) to join the Campus Life team.
Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director of Counseling and Wellbeing provides both leadership and direct clinical support to the campus community. Working in conjunction with departments and divisions campus wide, the Director of Counseling and Wellbeing facilitates growth and skill building at both the macro and micro level through collaboration, training of staff and students, and direct clinical service delivery to the student population. Additionally, the Director coordinates the use of the telehealth counseling provider.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides direct counseling support and services to the student population of the college;
- Engages in crisis intervention, referral, and case management services as need merits or dictates;
- Liaise with campus telehealth counseling provider;
- Facilitates training to various stakeholders within the campus community on a variety of topics, including but not limited to, crisis intervention, risk assessment, team building, communication, conflict resolution, and clinical skill building;
- Serves as a standing member of the Behavior Intervention Team (BIT);
- Contributes to policy creation, evaluation, and execution in conjunction with other college entities;
- Supervises the Coordinator of Clarke Health Center.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology or related field (doctorate preferred);
- LCSW, LMHC, LPC, or LCPC and New York state licensure are required (a LCSWR is preferred);
- Expertise in the provision of clinical services to college aged clients;
- Mastery of counseling techniques and strategies in effectively addressing Axis I and Axis II diagnoses, but especially chronic stress and trauma, depression, substance abuse, disordered eating, suicidal tendencies and self-harming behaviors, LGBTQ, and family of origin issues;
- Supervisory and leadership experience is essential to the position;
- Training and presentation skills are a must, as is the capacity to advocate within and external to the system;
- The capacity to establish, build, and sustain highly collaborative, goal directed relationships is fundamental to the position.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed primarily in a professional office environment. Must be able to lift 30 pounds and be comfortable with the physical demands of the job. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; sitting for extended periods of time; to occasionally bend, kneel, reach, and twist; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard. Frequent travel on campus and through buildings which require walking, climbing stairs and exposure to outside weather. This position requires some evening and weekend responsibilities, particularly during the academic year.
