Staff Backend Software Engineer - Platform Integration

Our FinTech client is looking for a Staff Backend Software Engineer to help build and scale the core data platform that powers their products and internal operations. This is a high-impact opportunity for an engineer who thrives on solving complex distributed systems challenges, designing highly reliable services, and building low-latency data-intensive applications at enterprise scale.

You will join a team responsible for the critical infrastructure and workflows that enable large-scale data onboarding, processing, validation, and integration. The systems you build will be used by engineering, DevOps, and operational teams across the organization and will directly influence the scalability, reliability, and performance of our platform.

• Salary Range: $170,000–$230,000 base salary, plus bonus and equity
• Workplace Type: Hybrid in New York City, 2–3 days per week in office

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and scale backend services that power large-scale data onboarding and integration workflows.
• Architect and develop low-latency, highly reliable, and fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Solve complex data engineering and platform challenges involving large volumes of structured and unstructured data.
• Drive technical architecture decisions and establish engineering best practices across the platform.
• Build automated workflows and services that improve operational efficiency and reduce manual intervention.
• Partner closely with Product, Client Solutions, Data Engineering, DevOps, and other engineering teams to deliver scalable platform capabilities.
• Improve system observability, resiliency, performance, and operational excellence.
• Lead projects from concept through design, implementation, deployment, and production support.
• Mentor and influence engineers across the organization through technical leadership and hands-on development.
• Explore and leverage modern AI-powered technologies where they can enhance data processing and platform capabilities

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience developing backend software in large-scale production environments.
• Expert-level proficiency in Python and modern backend development practices.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems, including scalability, fault tolerance, consistency, resilience, and service-oriented architectures.
• Experience building and operating high-throughput, low-latency systems with demanding reliability requirements.
• Proven track record designing and implementing large-scale data platforms, data pipelines, or data-intensive applications.
• Strong software design, system architecture, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience working in enterprise-scale environments that process and manage substantial volumes of business-critical data.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex technical initiatives and influence architectural direction.
• Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Java development experience.
• Experience with PySpark, Spark, or other distributed data processing frameworks.
• Experience building cloud-native systems on AWS.
• Experience with workflow orchestration, data ingestion platforms, and platform engineering.
• Experience implementing observability, monitoring, and reliability engineering best practices.
• Financial services, fintech, market data, or investment management experience is a plus, but not required.
• Exposure to AI/ML-enabled data processing systems is a plus.
