Community Support & Engagement Specialist

Job Summary

The Community Support & Engagement Specialist supports tenants in building meaningful community connections, strengthening independent living skills, and increasing participation in social, recreational, and life-enrichment activities.

This role works directly with tenants, families, housing staff, and community partners to create opportunities that support independence, wellness, and quality of life for individuals of all abilities.

Job Responsibilities

Community Engagement & Tenant Support

  • Plan and facilitate group and individual social, recreational, and community engagement activities.
  • Support tenants in building relationships with peers, families, and community resources.
  • Encourage participation in activities both within and outside of scheduled programming.
  • Promote opportunities that support daily living skills, cognitive engagement, and social development.

Housing & Safety Coordination

  • Communicate regularly with the Housing Specialist regarding tenant needs or concerns impacting housing stability.
  • Support tenants in identifying and reporting maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Provide reminders regarding trainings, tenant meetings, and community activities.

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of tenant interactions and supports provided.
  • Ensure documentation meets agency and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with agency policies and applicable regulations.

Team Collaboration & Professional Development

  • Participate in trainings, workshops, and professional development opportunities.
  • Support agency initiatives that promote community inclusion and independence.
  • Follow all agency policies, procedures, and departmental guidelines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Preferred experience (2+ years) supporting individuals in human services, housing, or community-based programs.
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, dual diagnoses, homelessness, or young adults preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and manage flexible scheduling needs.
  • Valid New York State driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to build rapport with diverse populations.
  • Recreational programming experience preferred but not required.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout the workday.
  • Frequent use of hands for documentation, materials handling, and activity support.
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Primarily local travel during business hours; occasional extended travel may be required.
