Director of Training

Interlude Coffee & Tea
New York, NY

Interlude Coffee & Tea is a standards-driven cafe with extremely high expectations for quality, consistency, and execution. We operate with defined systems, exact recipes, and a structured approach to training because we believe strong systems create clarity, confidence, and a better experience for both guests and staff.

The Barista Trainer exists to take our training program to the next level — organizing it, strengthening it, and ensuring it is executed consistently across the team and across locations. This is a hands-on leadership role. You will work barista shifts, train alongside staff, onboard new hires, run trial shifts, and actively coach and correct on the floor.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the development and ongoing refinement of a structured training curriculum
  • Elevate existing training guides into a clear, organized system
  • Train new hires through a step-by-step training plan and evaluate trial shifts using consistent, documented criteria
  • Work regular barista shifts, modeling precise execution and pace while supporting daily service
  • Maintain a live training tracker and provide regular reports on team progress, gaps, and areas of concern
  • Observe staff closely during service and correct deviations
  • Work across both locations to ensure standards and training are aligned everywhere
  • Develop and lead monthly education sessions on coffee, matcha, tea, pastries, and hospitality
  • Collaborate with ownership on improvements to training systems and controlled rollouts

Who This Role Is For

This role requires a high level of initiative and ownership. The right person moves projects forward independently, manages their own workflow, and brings progress, questions, and decisions to ownership proactively. We're looking for someone without ego, coachable, and genuinely invested in building a shared system.

  • Deeply enthusiastic about food and beverage — especially coffee, matcha, tea, and pastries
  • Genuinely interested in coaching, educating, and developing people over time
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and systems-minded
  • Comfortable building structure where it doesn't yet fully exist
  • Patient, observant, and at ease repeating and correcting details
  • Warm and hospitality-driven, with high standards for both guest and team experience
  • Comfortable leading, setting expectations, and holding a high bar

Required Experience & Skills

  • Experience in food & beverage, hospitality, education, or training environments
  • Experience training, onboarding, or developing others
  • Experience creating, maintaining, or working with training materials, SOPs, or structured guides
  • Strong understanding of service workflow and standards in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage structured processes
  • Experience using documentation systems and tracking progress across tasks or people
  • Proficiency with computer-based work, including documents, spreadsheets, and shared tools

Bonus Experience

  • Experience developing or improving training programs or curriculum
  • Experience running classes, tastings, or structured education sessions
  • Experience working across multiple locations or teams
  • Background in high-standards or systems-driven environments

Training Ramp

The initial phase of this role is focused on learning, executing, and thoroughly documenting how training currently works. Candidates should expect a meaningful ramp period in which they complete our full training program before gradually assuming full training leadership responsibilities.

Scheduling Requirements

This is a full-time position requiring approximately 35–40 hours per week across five shifts. Shifts are typically 7–10 hours and may start as early as 6:30 a.m. or end as late as 6:00 p.m. The role requires consistent availability across weekdays and weekends; schedules may vary week to week based on business needs. We are not offering flexible or part-time arrangements for this position.

Compensation

$25–30/hour, depending on experience and demonstrated skill

How to Apply
