• School day: 6:50 AM - 2:30 PM

• One day per week until 4:00 PM for planning, collaboration, and professional development

Position Overview

REACH Academy is seeking a passionate Home & Careers (Family & Consumer Science) Teacher to serve students in grades 5-8. The successful candidate will design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction that helps middle school students develop essential life skills in personal development, financial literacy, nutrition and wellness, family relationships, consumer awareness, and career exploration.

This role emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning that connects academic content to real-life application while fostering independence, responsibility, and ethical decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Instruction & Curriculum

• Teach NYS-aligned Home & Careers curriculum for grades 5-8, incorporating Family & Consumer Science standards and middle-level education best practices

• Design engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons in areas such as:

• Personal growth and goal setting

• Financial literacy and responsible consumer behavior

• Nutrition, food preparation, and wellness

• Family relationships and interpersonal skills

• Career awareness and workplace readiness

• Problem solving and decision-making skills

• Develop sequential units, performance tasks, and project-based learning experiences

• Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners, including English language learners and students with IEPs

• Integrate literacy, math, and technology skills within Home & Careers instruction

Student Development & Assessment

• Establish a structured, respectful classroom culture that supports positive behavior and engagement

• Monitor and assess student progress using formative and summative measures

• Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student performance

• Provide timely feedback to students and families

• Encourage independence, collaboration, and critical thinking

Collaboration & School Community

• Work collaboratively with grade-level teams, special education staff, and administration

• Participate in curriculum development and continuous program improvement

• Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress

• Contribute to school events, family engagement activities, and committees

• Uphold REACH Academy's mission, values, and professional standards

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain high expectations for student achievement and behavior

• Demonstrate flexibility and openness to instructional innovation

• Participate in professional development and instructional planning

• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head of School

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Family & Consumer Science, Education, or related field

• Fluency in spoken and written English

• Strong classroom management, communication, and organizational skills

• Commitment to equity, inclusion, and urban education

• Belief that all students can achieve high academic standards

Preferred

• Valid New York State Teaching Certification in Family & Consumer Sciences (or eligibility for certification/reciprocity)

• Master's degree

• Demonstrated record of student achievement

• Experience teaching middle school learners

Salary

REACH Academy Charter School follows a structured salary scale based on certification and years of experience:

• Certified first-year teacher (no experience): $45,000+ (goes by salary step and years experience)

• Uncertified teacher starting salary: $40,000
