Director of Development - Regional Major Gift Officer
The Lymphoma Research Foundation seeks a gift officer to support the major gift donor portfolio covering the NYC Metro area and NE region. Reporting to the Senior Director of Major and Planned Gifts, the Director of Development (NE Region) will join a five-person major gift team that supports the entire US via assigned regional markets. The Director will be responsible for implementing financially successful and mission-driven donor cultivation and solicitation strategies to support the lymphoma community.
Located in New York City, the Lymphoma Research Foundation is the nation’s largest non-profit organization devoted to funding innovative research and serving the lymphoma community through a comprehensive series of education programs, outreach initiatives, and patient services. The Foundation’s mission is to realize the promise of science to eradicate lymphoma and serve the community touched by this disease.
About the Foundation
The Lymphoma Research Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for lymphoma, the most common form of blood cancer, by funding biomedical research and supporting the next generation of lymphoma researchers. With the guidance of the Foundation’s prestigious Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), which is comprised of 45 of the world’s leading lymphoma experts, the Foundation invests in the research and scientists which have the greatest potential to improve our understanding of lymphomas and lead to improved treatment options for patients. To date, the Foundation has funded more than $86.4 million in lymphoma-specific research.
Through comprehensive disease guides and publications, in-person conferences, and online resources, the Foundation provides education for people with lymphoma, as well as their loved ones and caregivers. A robust suite of Foundation patient services provides direct support to people who have received a lymphoma diagnosis. These services include the national Lymphoma Helpline, a Clinical Trials Information Service, Lymphoma Support Network, and patient aid grant program. An industry leader in digital communications, the Foundation maintains a strong presence on multiple social media platforms and has won national awards for its innovative use of social media to educate cancer patients. The Foundation developed a first of its kind mobile app for people with lymphoma which was recognized by Apple as one of the best medical apps in the country. The Foundation also provides continuing medical education programs designed to increase the knowledge, skills and performance of healthcare professionals who treat and care for people with lymphoma.

About the Opportunity
Based in New York City, the Director of Development will support the Foundation’s major, principal, and planned gifts program. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Major and Planned Giving, this position will work with development staff throughout the country and in the National Headquarters located in New York City. The Director of Development is responsible for building a major gift pipeline across assigned regional areas by building and soliciting a portfolio of donors. This position works closely and collaboratively with the development team, patient programs and education team, the Foundation leadership, and physician partners to grow the major gifts donor pipeline.
The ideal candidate will be creative and entrepreneurial, with the ability to take initiative, work autonomously, and act with accountability. They will have a proven track record in cultivating, soliciting, securing, and stewarding major and planned gifts at the $50,000 level or greater. The position requires a deep, personal commitment to diversity in all forms including the recognition of all individuals with mutual respect and the acceptance of others without bias.
This role is an exempt, full-time position, with a salary range between $105,000-130,000 annually. This position is a hybrid role, and the Director of Development will be based out of the Foundation’s New York City headquarters and will require frequent donor visits within the Tri-State NYC Metro area. Please note the organization currently utilizes a flex schedule, and all New York-based staff are required to work in the Foundation office weekly Tuesday-Thursday; staff may elect to work remotely Mondays and Fridays.
Responsibilities
Fundraising (90%)
• Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of major and planned giving prospects.
• Become a context expert in lymphoma, maintaining ongoing familiarity with research and trends and build a working knowledge of funding priorities across the Foundation.
• Build relationships with key stakeholders throughout the organization including program staff, SAB members, Foundation Directors, grantees, and patients to stay current on program and research offerings and impact.
• Build a portfolio of prospects and identify their charitable interests in supporting the Foundation. Develop, test and carry out appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies to secure major gifts at the $10,000+ level.
• Develop and execute strategies that advance moves-management process and generate revenue, multi-year pledges, and future gifts that advance the Foundation priorities and unrestricted program needs.
• Partner with development colleagues and program staff to build out future funding needs and ongoing case for support.
• Collaborate with development leadership, grants administration, events staff, marketing, donor relations, and board/volunteer leadership to ensure coordination and clarity
• Responsible for achieving budgeted revenue goals across major and planned giving portfolio.
• Perform other major donor activities as required by Development and Foundation leadership as they are identified
Administrative (10%)
• Create timely reports that reflect portfolio progress; provide quarterly individual portfolio projections to Senior Director and Chief Philanthropy Officer
• Track and evaluate effectiveness of strategies to generate major gift donors;
contribute to goal setting and prepare progress reports for Development colleagues and leadership. • Write letters, appeals, proposals/solicitations and other communications as needed and maintain timely and accurate reports and information.
• Lead internal process related to documenting and organizing donors in the deferred/estate gift category.
• Collaborate with marketing and donor stewardship to ensure consistent and high impact communications is part of the donor engagement lifecycle.
• Carry an individual fundraising goal in the $2-3M range within 3 years.
• Record, with timeliness and precision, information about prospects and donors using Raiser’s Edge; also report activity and monitor resources and expenditures associated with portfolio.
• As needed, will represent the Foundation at programmatic events across the country
• Perform other organizational tasks as needed
Skills and Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
• Five or more years of increasingly responsible positions in development or a related field, with at least three years of major and planned giving experience, preferably in a health care or higher education setting.
• Excellent oral and written communication, analytic, and interpersonal skills. Proven track record developing proposals and fundraising plans, as well as generating creative and innovative fundraising strategies.
• Face-to-face cultivation/solicitation experience.
• Initiative, sound judgment, and an ability to work collaboratively to move programs and prospects forward.
• Demonstrated problem-solving ability in complex and ambiguous situations.
• Proven success in building relationships with key volunteers, administrative colleagues and donors, coupled with demonstrated consensus-building skills.
• Detail-oriented and highly organized
• Skilled with Microsoft suite and Blackbaud products
• Willingness to travel (domestic), and work nights and weekends when needed
• Possess a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive to/from events when traveling
• Ability to lift and move supply boxes during event preparation and execution up to 25 pounds.
