KIPP NYC Public Schools is a non-profit network of free, public charter schools that prepares students for success in college and life. In 1995 we started our first middle school, KIPP Academy, in The Bronx. Our goal was to graduate students with the strength of character and academic abilities needed to succeed in high school, college and beyond - and in so doing, to prove what is possible for all students. Today, our New York City network is comprised of eight elementary schools, nine middle schools, one high school, and KIPP Forward, a comprehensive support program for our alumni. KIPP NYC Public Schools currently serves more than 9,350 students and alumni and has a staff of more than 850. KIPP NYC is continuing to grow and opened two new middle schools and an elementary school August 2021!

Position Overview:

The Payroll Specialist is an essential member of our KIPP NYC Human Resource Administration (HRA) team. Serving as the main contact for all payroll inquiries, the Payroll Specialist will be responsible for the accurate and timely processing of the payroll for the KIPP NYC organization. This position is ideal for someone who is committed to continuous learning and innovation, able to balance multiple high-priority projects and tasks while collaborating with their team.

Reporting directly to the Payroll Manager on the KIPPNYC HRA Team, the Payroll Specialist will be based out of the KIPP NYC Shared Services Team, located in midtown Manhattan office.

This role is based in NYC and will require travel to our schools. Cadence and frequency of travel to schools is determined by your leadership team. If you relocate outside of a commutable distance or out of the state of NY, your employment will be subject to review, which may include separation from KIPP NYC. It is important that you notify HR if you move or have plans to relocate.

General duties and responsibilities, but not limited to:

Administration

  • Manage payroll related communications, including audit requests, employee inquiries via Zendesk, and reporting in a timely and professional manner with exceptional, forward facing, friendly customer service
  • Manage timekeeping policies and protocols, including electronic / manual timesheet calculation and review with approval, follow up with supervisors
  • Resolve payroll errors
  • Support PTO and benefits tracking
  • Maintain all payroll-related records and documents
  • Proven work experience as a Payroll Administrator / Payroll Specialist
  • Strong numerical aptitude and attention to detail

Payroll Administration

  • Administer and process semi-monthly payrolls, including entering payroll changes and verifying the accuracy of all data prior to submission for all company entities, including garnishments and levies,
  • Develop strong controls and procedures to ensure accurate and timely payroll for all pay companies, including receipt of all data required to process payroll
  • Manage relationship with Payroll Service Provider to ensure successful implementation of requested changes and enhancements
  • Support year-end payroll closing procedures
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local government regulations and reporting requirements that affect payroll processing
  • Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, accounting or related field highly preferred
  • 2+ years' of payroll experience required, preferably processing multiple companies simultaneously with an understanding of Accounting Fundamentals and Payroll best practices
  • Experience with UKG, UltiPro or Kronos preferred, with strong reporting skills
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite, intermediate Excel skills required
  • Meticulous attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills; ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Demonstrated passion for and a commitment to the KIPP mission for high-quality public education and social justice

Additional Information

Compensation and Benefits:

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $71,000 to $81,000 per year. Salary ranges at KIPP NYC are standardized based on role level and role function. Individual salaries are determined through a lens of equity, accounting for years of experience relevant to the role and scope of responsibilities, and are benchmarked against others within the same salary band. Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range, however they are ultimately determined by scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity.
