About the Department
The Public Affairs Department consists of NYRR’s Media and Public Relations, Government Relations and Community Engagement teams. Media and Public Relations share the stories of NYRR participants, events, and programs to drive awareness to NYRR’s organization and mission, while also enhancing and protecting the company’s reputation. Government Relations & Community Engagement manages NYRR's relationships with local and state elected officials, and governmental agencies, as well as its relationships with community stakeholders, from our runners and clubs to like-minded organizations. Overall, representing NYRR's interests, Public Affairs serves as a centralized bridge and internal partner for the organization and governmental and community partners.
About the Internship
The New York Road Runners Internship program is a paid, 21-week experience in which interns have the opportunity to learn from the best in the non-profit business. Interns will work collaboratively with professionals in their field of study and will have opportunities to network across the organization. The program will include professional development events and a chance to make a direct impact on the communities in New York City by working select events. Interns will receive onboarding and training to learn about NYRR and gain the knowledge needed to best perform in their role.
Internship dates will be Monday, June 15, 2026 to Friday, November 13, 2026.
This internship candidate will work with the Public Relations Department, which crafts and executes the organization’s media and public relations strategy and manages all PR initiatives on behalf of NYRR. The Public Relations team works to gain visibility and appreciation for NYRR’s brand image, weekly and marquee races, youth and community programs, and coaching and training programs, all with the aim of supporting New York Road Runners, a New York City-based nonprofit and its vision is to build healthier lives and stronger communities through the transformative power of running.
The PR Intern will be an integral member of the department during the TCS New York City Marathon season, contributing to resources the team provides journalists for their coverage of the event while also pitching inspiring storylines and monitoring coverage for the organization.
Intern Responsibilities (primary and secondary duties):
- Support the public relations department with media event executions, writing, researching, and collating press materials and related content for the TCS New York City Marathon and other New York Road Runners events.
- Draft press materials including press releases, media alerts, etc.
- Publish content updates and media resources to NYRR’s online media center
- Update media contact lists, monitor press clippings, and assist with departmental administrative duties as assigned
- Assist with press operations for the TCS New York City Marathon, including media materials and media during race week
- Support team by executing administrative tasks
Internship Hours:
- Interns will work 25 hours per week Monday through Friday.
- Interns are required to work the TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1st, as well two other weekend events (dates to be determined).
- Other weekend event-based work may be required and will be evaluated as needed based on position.
Internship Requirements:
- Currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Masters program working towards a degree in communications, public relations, or journalism
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work occasional weekends or evenings
- Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet and perform under tight deadlines, think clearly under pressure and exercise good judgment
- Interest in media and news; interest in staying up-to-date on current trends
- Experience in writing press releases, pitch letters, biographies, or articles is a plus
- Passion for NYRR and our mission; knowledge of the running and professional runners is a plus
Physical Requirements:
- The ability to be on your feet, outside in the elements for the duration of event shifts
Salary: $22/hour
