REPORTS TO: District Superintendent



SUPERVISES:          All certified and non-certified staff at the Alternative High School



QUALIFICATIONS, practice AND COMPETENCIES:

»Possesses New York State Certificate for School Building Administrator, with a minimum of 3 years in a leadership abilities function.

»Holds a permanent teacher’s certification.

»Has prosperous high school teaching practice with a minimum of six years teaching practice, three of which are working with “at-risk” populations.

»Has strong interpersonal and communication expertise.

»Demonstrates knowledge and knowledge of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning.



tasks AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Principal of Alternative High School will:

»Provide leadership abilities and managerial oversight of instructional programs and school operations to ensure a school climate that fosters the educational development of each student at the Alternative High School

»Exercise sound judgment and appropriate discretion in the administration of professional tasks

»Demonstrate an knowledge of the regulations regarding the operations of a high school

»Demonstrate the capability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary

»Demonstrate the capability to use electronic equipment for word processing, data management information retrieval, visual and audio presentations



JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Principal of Alternative High School will:

»Assume responsibility for the management of the school in conformity with law, administrative code, Board policies, and regulations

»Exercise leadership abilities in school-level planning for improvement of instruction. Involve staff, students, and parents in the development of school plans to achieve student performance objectives, curriculum content standards and core course proficiencies

»Establish and maintain an effective learning climate in the school

»Assist in the selection of appropriate instructional materials and monitor delivery of the instructional program. Participate in the development, evaluation and revision of curriculum and assume responsibility for the implementation of approved programs

»Plan, organize and supervise all curricular and extra-curricular activities

»Interview, recommend for appointment, assign, supervise and evaluate the performance of all school employees and assist them in achievement of their job goals

»Conduct observations of teaching staff members, prepare written comments and offer constructive suggestions for improvement when appropriate

»Prepare and submit the school’s budget requests and monitor the expenditure of funds

»Ensure the safekeeping of student and personnel files and other confidential records and documents and the destruction of public records in conformity with law and regulations

»Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional tasks and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines

»Prepare or supervise the preparation of all reports, records and other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration.

»Conduct staff meetings as necessary for the proper functioning of the school

»Plan and supervise regularly scheduled parent/teacher conferences and make arrangements for special conferences as necessary

»Ensure the proper collection, safekeeping, and accounting of school activity funds

»Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with the administration, instructional staff, students, parents, and representatives of resource agencies within the community

»Attend required staff meetings and serve, as appropriate, on staff committees

»Continue to grow professionally through collaboration with colleagues and professional growth practices

»Perform any tasks that are within the scope of employment and certifications, as assigned and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation

»Adhere to New York school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, Board of Education policies and regulations, school regulations and procedures, and contractual obligations

»Participate in CSE meetings as needed

»Perform other related tasks as may be assigned by the Deputy Superintendent/ District Superintendent.
