CHS is also a pivotal partner in New York City's criminal justice reform efforts. Work Shifts
  • 8:00 AM - 8:30 PM
  • Various Location across Rikers Island
  • Scheduling Notes: Nurses are required to work every other weekend
  • Duties & Responsibilities Supervised by:
    • PATIENT CARE COORDINATOR
    • ON-SITE DIRECTOR OF NURSING
    General Duties Work in collaboration with physicians to provide patients with care, education, and support. Assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records. Administer nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients. May advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention or provide case management. Coordinate and assign duties to other health care personnel, such as licensed practical nurses, nursing aides, and patient care associates. Responsibilities
    • Comply with procedures, regulations, and rules in maintaining medical records.
    • Monitor, record, and report symptoms and changes in patients' conditions.
    • Record patients' medical information and vital signs.
    • Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses and conditions.
    • Consult and coordinate with health care team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans.
    • Monitor all aspects of patient care, including diet and physical activity.
    • Direct and supervise less skilled nursing/health care personnel, or supervise a particular unit on one shift.
    • Prepare patients for, and assist with, examinations and treatments.
    • Observe nurses and patients to ensure that proper nursing care is provided.
    • Instruct individuals and groups on health education, disease prevention, childbirth, and develop health improvement programs.
    • Prepare rooms, sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies, and ensure stock of supplies is maintained.
    • Administer local, inhalation, intravenous, and other anesthetics.
    • Provide health care, first aid, immunizations, and assistance in convalescence and rehabilitation.
    • Conduct specified laboratory tests.
    • Direct and coordinate infection control services, advising and consulting with personnel about necessary precautions.
    • Perform administrative and managerial functions, including taking responsibility for a unit's staff and planning.
    • Provide or arrange for training/instruction of auxiliary personnel.
    • Refer patients to specialized health resources or community agencies furnishing assistance.
    • Consult with institutions or associations regarding issues and concerns relevant to the practice and profession of nursing.
    • Work with individuals, groups, and families to plan and implement programs designed to improve the overall health of communities.
    • Triage patients, assess needs, provide clinical advice, and deliver patient education.
    • Engage in research activities related to nursing.
    Emergency Response
    • Respond to medical emergencies, including falls, heart attacks, strokes, burns, and post-operative recovery.
    • Evaluate patients to determine the appropriate course of treatment.
    • Provide care as clinically indicated (CPR, AED, shock prevention, bleeding control, spinal injury prevention).
    • Monitor patients and maintain stability during transport to the clinic.
    • Assist with the transfer of patients via Urgicare and/or EMS to emergency units or hospitals.
    • Document medical treatment provided.
    • Maintain cleanliness of equipment and replenish damaged or used supplies.
    • Collaborate with pharmacy to replenish medical supplies.

    Working Conditions
    • Patients require round-the-clock care; hours include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
    • RNs are required to stand for long periods.
    • Employees may need to safely move patients, using assistance when necessary.
    • Exposure to chemical and infectious hazards is possible.
    • Must work with confused, agitated, or uncooperative patients.
    Physical Demands
    • Ability to lift 50 pounds; patient transfers may require up to 100 pounds.

    Minimum Qualifications 1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and 2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Special Note: For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA). Additional Salary Compensation In addition to base compensation, you may also receive the following based on collective bargaining: An annual education differential if you currently possess an appropriate degree in nursing or an allied health discipline from an accredited college or university, as listed below:
    • Bachelors in allied health discipline = $900
    • Masters in allied health discipline = $1,200
    • Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) = $1,800
    • Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) = $2,000
    • Doctorate in Education, Nursing Practice or PhD in Nursing (DNP) = $2,500
    An annual certification differential ranging from $1,878 up to $4,878 if you currently hold appropriate certifications that are nationally recognized in the discipline or area of specialization for which you are employed.
