Director - China
Overview
A global advisory consultancy is currently seeking a Director – China, to join its New York office.
Directors work closely with client teams in London, Copenhagen, and New York to lead and execute the firm’s global client engagements. As China becomes central to every conversation on growth, risk, and resilience, this role offers the opportunity to shape how senior decision-makers understand and respond to one of the defining strategic challenges of our time.
Key Responsibilities
The China Director’s core responsibility is to synthesize analysis on China’s macroeconomy, technological and industrial policy, political landscape, and global trade and investment initiatives:
- Monitoring developments and drafting timely, client-relevant China analysis, including China notes, sector-specific notes and other inputs.
- Lead on the agenda and preparations for internal as well as client-facing China calls, in coordination with Partners and Senior Advisors.
- Working closely with the Head of the China Practice, provide input to a portfolio of client teams representing different sectors including originating, designing, leading and executing China-specific projects and engagement. This could include:
- Research and writing of original content;
- Scoping bespoke methodologies and tailored approaches to link the client needs to the firm’s capabilities and value-add;
- Briefing senior client representatives;
- Developing a deep understanding of clients’ strategy, operations, supply chain and other exposures as it relates to China, to tightly tailor assessments to their needs;
- Managing teams to best leverage skills and strengths within the context of a client engagement.
- Monitoring and reporting upon China-related sources of risk and opportunity in the global geopolitical and macroeconomic environment; developing and leveraging individual expertise to contribute to the overall output of the firm.
- Regular interaction with the firm’s Senior Advisors and contributors to capture and crystallize the insights and judgments of the extended team.
- Contributing to the company’s Director Group and its role in continuing to build on the internal infrastructure of the firm and the firm’s growth.
- Mentoring of Associate and Analyst-level team members, helping further the team’s professional development through training, identifying opportunities for growth
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Fluency in written and spoken English; working knowledge of Mandarin Chinese;
- Background and expertise in China-related policy work or conducting business in China;
- Demonstrated understanding of business / private sector implications of policy and macro factors;
- Excellent drafting, editing and briefing skills;
- Ability to prepare accurate, concise analytical reports, integrating research and AI tools;
- Ability to work across multiple delivery formats, including PowerPoint;
- Ability to produce a consistently high standard of work under pressure;
- Experience briefing or public speaking, professionally and authoritatively;
- Ability to prioritize and manage work on multiple projects to tight deadlines; and
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
- 8-10 years of China-focused experience in policymaking, think tanks, consulting/professional services or the wider private sector.
