WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt/10 month

PURPOSE: At Tapestry, a Dean of Students ensures that their campus provides its students and families with a world-class K-12 educational experience. Each Dean of Students helps to make this possible by creating a thriving school culture based on Tapestry's core values. Our Deans build strong relationships with students, families and staff; support the implementation of the school's culture systems; and provide behavioral interventions for students. By closely collaborating with the Assistant Principal and student support team members, the Dean of Students maintains a school culture where students feel safe, experience a sense of belonging, and are supported to achieve their academic goals.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Planning and Alignment

Continuously invests teammates in our shared vision for how students will demonstrate the core principles of the Expeditionary Learning Model (Mastery of Knowledge and Skills, Character and High Quality Work).

Continuously invests teammates in a shared vision for how staff members experience their work at Tapestry-including how they will receive ongoing coaching and support in a collaborative environment focused on student success.

Continuously invests their families in a shared vision for how students and families experience their time at Tapestry-including by positively engaging with their families, addressing concerns as they arise, and partnering with the school's parent organization.

Cultivates a school-wide belief that all students can learn and achieve at high levels.

Partners with their Assistant Principal to understand the criteria that the SUNY Charter Schools Institute will use to evaluate the success of their school during this charter term.

Ensures that their school's program aligns to the mission and key design elements as well as the goals and expectations of the SUNY Charter Schools Institute.

Participates in an annual evaluation with the Assistant Principal.
Professional Development

Participates in summer professional development, including assigned sessions during New Teacher Orientation and summer culture leader development.

Partners with their Assistant Principal to support the planning and facilitation of school culture professional development sessions throughout the school year.

Ensures that all campus staff receive the training and support necessary to build culturally responsive classrooms that emphasize building strong learning partnerships that help students develop into independent learners.
Building Strong Relationships
-
Effectively build and maintain relationships with students, staff, parents/caregivers, and community stakeholders that establish mutual trust and respect.

Develops and cultivates a school wide culture that fosters positive relationships between and among all members of the school community.

Participates in new family orientation sessions and student-led conferences when assigned to strengthen learning partnerships with students and their families.

Facilitates parent/caregiver meetings when necessary to support students, including by:

Facilitating re-integration meetings after suspensions

Meeting with families to build support plans for individual students

Facilitating conflict resolution meetings, peer mediation and restorative circles when appropriate
Implementing School Culture Systems

Collaborates with an Assistant Principal to continuously clarify the vision for major critical routines at their campus (including, but not necessarily limited to, arrival, lunch, dismissal, hallway transitions, schoolwide culture systems, and restorative follow up to classroom removals).

Monitoring students at an assigned post during arrival and dismissal

Supervising students during student lunch periods in the cafeteria

Conducting structured hallway walkthroughs to ensure all students are in class on time and to support effective student entry into class

Implements Tapestry's Code of Conduct, ensuring that all processes related to student discipline are appropriately followed and consistent with applicable laws and the school's authorizer, the SUNY Charter Schools Institute.

Documents student discipline incidents in appropriate systems, including the school's Student Information System and the school's culture tracker.

Supports the implementation of the school's safety plan to ensure the safety of all students and staff on campus.

Actively participates in the school's safety drills and supports the team to manage emergency situations in alignment with Tapestry's emergency response protocols.

Provides supervision of students during assigned student activities, such as athletic events, social activities, field work, student celebrations and community meetings.

Provides in-class support during instructional time when assigned.
-
Collaborates with the Assistant Principal to plan and implement a variety of school activities and events to encourage positive student behavior (such as planning events to recognize students for their accomplishments in academic or athletics).

Participates in weekly Climate Team meetings with other school leaders, such as the Principal, Assistant Principal and student support staff members.
Providing Behavior Interventions and Supports
-
Provides support in teacher classrooms when requested to address student behavior, including by implementing the school's classroom removal protocols when appropriate.
-
Supports the implementation of differentiated plans for individual students (such as by supporting a student to take a timed break as part of their 504 plan).
-
Develops and implements behavior contracts with students to identify behaviors of concern and provide aligned support and progress monitoring to improve student behavior.
-
Leverages Restorative Practices to address conflicts in ways that build community, strengthen relationships, increase personal accountability, and repair harm.

Conducts investigations when necessary to ensure appropriate follow up to student discipline situations, including, when necessary, providing information to the school's DASA coordinator
-
Plans and organizes extracurricular activities that develop student interpersonal skills and relationships, as needed.

Reports any immediate social/emotional behaviors that are of concern to the school guidance counselor, social worker and/or Assistant Principal to ensure students receive the support they need.

Facilitates structures like lunch detention and after school detention when assigned.
Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
-
Successful past experience as a teacher with a track-record of building exemplary classroom culture or as a student support team member with a track-record of successfully implementing schoolwide culture systems. Candidates with similar experience will also be considered (such as candidates who are new to the field of education who have prior successful experience as a coach or with a community organization serving a diverse population of students).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is performed primarily in an office environment, exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion including walking, bending, standing. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers to complete typing, filing, and data entry. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. Position requires talking, walking, driving, speaking and comprehension of complex matters.
