Job Summary
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist, reporting to the Director of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Risk Management, will provide professional and technical EH&S skills across campus for internal and external customers. The EHS Specialist will supervise EHS programs and be proactive in implementing best practices, minimizing risk, and promoting a culture of environmental stewardship and safety all over the organization.


Minimum Qualifications

»A Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health & Safety or a related field

»Five years of practice in environmental health and safety and regulatory compliance

»Valid US Driver's License


A significant combination of education, practice, and certifications may be substituted for a degree.




Preferred Qualifications

»Formal training in HAZWOPER, RCRA, DOT, OSHA, DEP, EPA, and NFPA regulations

»Training or operational practice with environmental, safety, or quality management systems, such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or OSHA VPP


Minimum expertise, Skills, and Abilities

» expertise of current federal and state EHS regulations and emerging laws and trends.

»Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.

» expertise of proper procedures for responding to emergencies involving hazardous chemical exposures.

» capability to provide training to other personnel on Environmental Health and Safety practices and programs.

»Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Windows, or other technical tools in completing assignments.

» capability to influence and coordinate EH&S activity across Rensselaer Portfolios, resolve problems promptly, and develop alternate solutions when necessary.

» capability to organize/prioritize existing resources and incorporate new information, as needed, to implement the most effective solutions.

» capability to communicate clearly and courteously.

»Strong planning, organizing, and practical time management skills.

» capability to work independently and as part of a team.

» capability to demonstrate commitment to higher education and work with a diverse population.

»Effective written and verbal communication skills.
