NBC News Digital is hiring a reporter to cover the rapid development and societal impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) with expertise, depth, speed and original reporting.

This reporter will cover how AI and related technologies are reshaping industries, culture and society, as well as cover the key personalities, companies and policies driving this change. They will approach news coverage from an AI-centric lens, looking at how the globe's top AI players, products and companies are influencing the world and its workforce. They will have sources inside AI companies, in government, in think tanks, academia and beyond, and will have the ability to quickly cultivate new sources.

The person should be able to report deeply and with detail on the AI industry's major developments, and then translate that information for a broad audience.

This reporter will produce a mix of daily stories on breaking AI news, as well as 1-2 weekly reported features, unearthing new information about topics including but not limited to frontier AI companies, how AI is impacting people and AI's integration into business and the government.

Responsibilities:

• Develop deep and rigorously reported and compelling stories about AI told across digital platforms.

• Develop a strong industry source network and contribute to reporting about AI across NBC News.

• Respond rapidly to breaking news and drive distinctive coverage by pitching weekly stories identifying AI industry trends, unique observations, or uncovering new information.

• At least one year experience covering technology, with a focus on AI, at a major newspaper, website, or magazine.

• Multiple examples of well-written and deeply reported stories on complex AI topics, as well as quick news hits and explainers.

• Experience covering a beat and developing sources within the AI research, industry, and policy communities.

• Deep familiarity with AI, including machine learning, large language models and automation.

Desired Characteristics:

• Ability to balance quick-turn news assignments with longer-term enterprise work.

• Creative approach to tech and AI coverage, including willingness and interest in experimenting with new formats or product features.

• Ability and interest in working cross-functionally with other digital reporters, editors, and TV partners across NBC News.

Additional requirements:

Salary range: $93,000 - $150,000
