Special Education Teacher

In primary and secondary education settings, this role supports students with diverse learning profiles by helping create structured, responsive classrooms where every learner can grow, participate, and succeed.
As a Special Education Teacher, you will play an important part in delivering individualized instruction and supporting students' academic, developmental, and functional progress. This role works closely with families, classroom support staff, and interdisciplinary partners to create learning experiences that are thoughtful, adaptive, and aligned with each student's goals.
Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct classroom activities adapted to student needs.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate IFSP/IEP goals and objectives.
- Participate in student evaluations, intake processes, and annual reviews.
- Prepare and adapt lesson plans, materials, and classroom environments.
- Maintain accurate attendance, progress records, and required reports.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and parents/guardians.
- Supervise, support, and evaluate Teacher Assistants.
- Participate in student transitions and related program activities.
- Ensure student dignity, privacy, and confidentiality at all times.
- Assist with student mobility, positioning, feeding, and toileting as needed.
- Deliver specialized instruction in literacy, math, and functional life skills.
- Monitor student performance and maintain accurate documentation for compliance requirements.
- Adapt classroom materials and behavior strategies to support diverse learning needs.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or master's degree in special education or a related field.
- At least 6 months of special education teaching experience.
- Experience developing or implementing IEPs.
- Experience supporting students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.
- Experience working with both preschool and school-age students in special education, early intervention, UPK, or day care programs.
- Ability to adapt instruction, materials, and classroom supports to meet student needs.
- Experience collaborating with families, therapists, and interdisciplinary teams.
- Ability to physically assist students with mobility, positioning, feeding, and toileting as needed.
- Valid New York State Special Education teaching certification, along with valid New York State certification in Early Childhood Education or N-6 for Day Care and UPK teaching assignments.
- Completion of required New York State Domestic Violence and Child Abuse identification and reporting courses.
- Eligibility to work in the United States.
- Fingerprinted by, or willing to be fingerprinted by, the NYC Board of Education and Department of Investigation.
- Registration on the New York State TEACH website.
- Ability to complete a pre-employment physical exam within the past year, including documentation of PPD, MMR, TDAP, and Varicella immunization status.
