The Role

As a Staff Backend Engineer at Farther, you'll be a key technical leader within our engineering organization, architecting and driving the development of our core platform and infrastructure. You'll shape the technical vision of our backend systems, establish engineering standards, and tackle our most complex distributed systems challenges. Working on a fully serverless stack built on AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) with Python and Scala, you'll influence technical decisions that impact our entire financial platform. This is a technical leadership role focused on engineering excellence, not people management.

Your Impact

• Drive technical architecture decisions that shape the future of our serverless backend platform


• Lead the design and implementation of large-scale distributed systems across multiple projects using AWS serverless technologies


• Establish backend engineering standards and best practices for serverless architectures that scale across the organization


• Tackle complex technical challenges in serverless system design, scalability, and reliability


• Guide and mentor senior engineers through complex technical decisions in serverless environments


• Drive technical excellence through code reviews, architecture reviews, and technical documentation


• Collaborate with engineering leadership to define technical strategy and roadmap for serverless infrastructure


• Design and implement critical financial systems architecture using AWS serverless services


• Champion engineering excellence in distributed serverless systems and backend development


• Lead technical discovery and implementation of major new platform capabilities on AWS

The Ideal Match

• 10+ years of backend development experience, with deep expertise in distributed systems and serverless architectures


• Expert knowledge of Python or Scala and modern serverless frameworks


• Extensive experience with AWS serverless technologies (lambdas, SQS/SNS, S3, EventBridge, CloudWatch) and distributed data systems


• Strong background in financial systems architecture and serverless implementation


• Track record of making significant technical decisions that positively impact engineering organizations


• Experience mentoring senior engineers and driving technical best practices in cloud-native environments


• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, particularly in technical documentation


• Proven ability to break down complex technical problems and guide solutions across multiple teams


• Deep understanding of AWS cloud infrastructure and serverless microservices architecture


• History of successful technical leadership without direct management responsibilities

Bonus Points

• Experience building trading systems or financial platforms on serverless architectures


• Background in high-availability serverless system design


• Expertise in event-driven architectures and AWS native services


• Experience with technical strategy and roadmap planning for cloud-native systems


• Knowledge of financial regulatory requirements and compliance in cloud environments


• Track record of solving complex distributed serverless systems challenges
