About Us: Lodestar Children’s Services is a nonprofit organization that provides one-on-one support to youth up to age 21 who are diagnosed with mental health challenges. Our mission is to empower young people by helping them build skills, confidence, and resilience through individualized care . Lodestar provides home and community-based mental health services to young people and their families on Long Island, Queens, and Brooklyn.

We are dedicated to a client-centered approach , empowering families to build on their strengths while supporting the youth’s social, emotional, and behavioral growth. Our work takes place directly in the home and community, where meaningful change happens.

Position Overview: We are seeking an in-home mental health provider to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals beginning or continuing their careers in mental health who want hands-on experience providing direct support to youth and families. Under the guidance of mental health professionals, you will implement treatment goals, teach coping strategies, and reinforce positive behaviors in real-world settings.

Because our work involves supporting youth with mental health challenges, Lodestar is seeking team members who can dedicate at least one year to the role. This commitment helps us provide the steady, trusting relationships that are essential to our clients’ growth and healing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide in-home and community-based mental health support services to children and families.
  • Use client-centered approaches to build rapport, encourage engagement, and promote skill development.
  • Support children in practicing coping strategies, social skills, and emotional regulation.
  • Collaborate with families and treatment teams to reinforce therapeutic goals.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and progress notes in compliance with agency and NYS policies.
  • Participate in regular supervision, training, and team meetings.

Schedule:

  • Hours are based on the needs of the families and service providers. The ideal candidate is available between 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM at least three days during the week- as most clients are school-aged and typically available after school hours.
  • Morning shifts are not available Monday-Friday, as most of our clients are in school during the day.
  • Flexible scheduling makes this position a great fit for individuals attending school or working other jobs.
  • While we do offer the option to provide services to clients on weekends, weekend availability is not required for this position.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related human services field (required).
  • Higher paying, more clinically based services are available for candidates with a Master’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or Counseling and 1 year experience with children within the mental health field.
  • Interest or experience in mental health, child development, or social services (fieldwork, internships, or related jobs count).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and ability to engage children and families.
  • Driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to client homes and community settings (required for roles on Long Island).
  • Commitment to professional growth and ongoing learning.
  • Must pass all state-mandated background checks, including fingerprinting and clearance through the NY State Child Abuse Registry.

Compensation:

  • Starting pay: $24.00 – $27.50 per service hour during a two-month probationary period. Probationary pay is determined by educational level only.
  • Post-probation: $28.50 – $32.00 per service hour based on performance and services provided (after successful probationary period). The types of services you can provide are based on educational level and/or field experience.
  • Pay is calculated on a per-diem model .

Higher Pay Eligibility:

  • Applicants with a Master’s degree (in Psychology, Sociology, or Counseling) and at least one year of relevant experience in children’s mental health, addiction, foster care, child welfare, juvenile justice, or related human services are eligible for $46.00 per hour after completing the probationary period.
