Overview

The Amalgamated Nursery School (ANS), a community parent cooperative school in the Northwest Bronx, is currently seeking a dynamic director for our school. Join our team of caring professionals committed to maintaining ANS as a community-based children’s laboratory for developmentally-appropriate learning. We will be offering universal 2K, 3K and 4K in the upcoming school year. At ANS, children “learn to learn” – they are encouraged to develop their curiosity, explore their interests, and realize their creativity. At this historically parent cooperative nursery, families play an active role in the program and we seek to build strong relationships between school, family, and community.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with preschool children and their parents. They will embrace the opportunity to lead the ANS team of seasoned, dedicated educators in bringing a developmentally-based, teacher designed curriculum to children in our community. They will possess excellent communication and leadership skills, exhibit compassionate mentoring, have the ability to be creative and innovative in the implementation of our curriculum and seek proactively to maintain strong relationships between our school, families and community.

This position will report to the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Climate and Culture

  • Maintain a strong relationship between families, school and community including taking an active role planning community and fundraising events for the school.
  • Ensure a safe environment for the children in our care.
  • Proactively seek to retain children and increase enrollment at ANS
  • Proactively seek to retain staff at ANS.
  • Continue the school’s relationship as a Professional Development Site for Lehman College’s Department of Early Childhood Education.

Teaching and Learning

  • Hire, train, and supervise teachers and other staff.
  • Maintain, develop and/or modify developmentally-appropriate curriculum to meet the needs of children enrolled in the school and remain current with developments in the progressive education field.
  • Regularly monitor staff performance and provide coaching or mentoring for performance improvement and development.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and working with staff to ensure high performance and to promote a positive employee environment.
  • Facilitate regularly scheduled staff meetings to support team building, collaboration amongst teaching staff and professional development.

Operations

  • Manage the school in accordance with financial and budgetary guidelines.
  • Operate the school according to NYS andNYC licensing standards.
  • Keep financial records and work with the school bookkeeper and board to develop budgets for DOE funding and tuition-based classes.
  • Purchase supplies, equipment, snacks and other materials necessary for program operations and to support curriculum.
  • Work with the Amalgamated Cooperative and parent body to maintain the facilities of the school.
  • Maintain NAEYC Accreditation.
  • Meet regularly and work closely with the Board of Directors.
  • Manage a small team of contractors, i.e. bookkeeper.

Requirements

  • Committed to play-based and experiential teaching and learning.
  • Commitment to working with a diverse community of families - racially, socio-economically, linguistically, learning style and abilities.
  • Experience with collaborations and community partnerships.
  • Team builder, highly organized, with excellent customer service/communication skills.
  • Flexible, energetic and compassionate leader.
  • Proven commitment to community-building.
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience.
  • Up to date NYS Teacher Certification.
  • Familiar with NYC DOH and DOE licensing regulations, or a commitment to learn them.
  • Computer proficient including Word, Excel and social media.
  • Have or be willing to obtain required certifications required for NYCDOHMH and NYCFDNY.
  • Pass background checks required by NYCDOHMH.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working with a Parent Board or Board of Directors.
  • Invoicing and budgeting experience.
  • Spanish speaker

Salary: Competitive salary, dependent on experience
