SUMMARY

SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for a Senior Counselor within the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). Reporting to the EOP Director, the Senior Counselor plays a critical role in supporting historically underserved students who demonstrate strong potential for academic success by providing intentional academic, personal, and financial counseling and advisement. This position engages actively in student development initiatives and contributes meaningfully to retention and overall student success. The Senior Counselor collaborates with faculty, campus offices, and support units across the institution to ensure that EOP students receive holistic and coordinated support. A strong commitment to equity, inclusion, advocacy, and the mission of opportunity programs is essential to this role.

JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential Functions:

Academic Counseling & Advisement

  • Provides comprehensive academic advisement to all assigned EOP students throughout each semester.

  • Conducts regular one-on-one meetings to review academic plans, progress, advising, and registration needs.

  • Serves as the official academic advisor for incoming EOP students (first-time full-time, transfer and/or readmit).

  • Collaborates with faculty advisors to support students' academic planning.

Academic Student Development & Support

  • Monitors academic performance and evaluates student progress using midterm grades and EOP Academic Performance Progress Reports (APPRs).

  • Identifies academic concerns and refers students to academic support resources.

  • Participates in EOP initiatives that promote retention, skill-building, and academic success.

Financial Aid Counseling

  • Maintains updated knowledge of federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs, policies, and timelines.

  • Assists students with forms, processes, and resolving aid-related issues.

  • Collaborates with Financial Aid, Student Accounts offices to support aid processing and billing.

Personal and Social Counseling

  • Provides individual and group counseling in areas such as crisis intervention, motivation, self-esteem, interpersonal skills, and college adjustment.

  • Refers students to appropriate campus and community resources when needed.

Career Counseling & Guidance

  • Assists students with career exploration, planning, and understanding academic pathways.

  • Provides information regarding major/minor declarations, campus career resources, internships, co-ops, and graduate school preparation.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Supports accurate and timely data collection and reporting, including enrollment, retention, and required SUNY EOP submissions.

  • Maintains timely, accurate, and confidential student records, including required conference notes and documentation in Slate.

Instructional Support

  • Provides instructional support for EOP-affiliated courses when assigned.

  • Prepares syllabi, delivers lessons, and provides assessments and records as required.

Other

  • Leads and/or serves on departmental, divisional, and institutional committees.

  • Participates in professional organizations such as the Tri-State Consortium.

  • Attends and supports the University and EOP at recruitment and yield events (e.g., SUNY Operation Inform, college fairs, Open Houses, Accepted Student Days).

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university

  • Demonstrated experience providing academic, financial, or personal counseling in a higher education or student support setting

  • Ability to manage a large caseload, maintain detailed documentation, and work both independently and collaboratively

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills

  • A strong commitment to supporting a diverse student population and enhancing student success

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in counseling, higher education, social work, or related field by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university

  • Two or more years of counseling or advising experience in an Opportunity Program

  • Experience working within SUNY systems and familiarity with Banner, Slate, DegreeWorks, or comparable platforms

  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, SUNY policies, and regulations impacting Educational Opportunity Programs

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work Schedule:

37.5 hours/week: Monday-Friday, 8 am-4 pm.

Retirement

  • NYS Employees' Retirement System (ERS) and NYS Teachers' Retirement System (TRS) - Defined benefit plans; benefits are based on best Final Average Salary and years of service.

  • SUNY Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) - Defined contribution plan; benefits are based on the employer and employee contributions and the success of the investments. Employer contribution is 8% of salary for first seven years of service, 10% thereafter.

Membership for full-time and permanent employees is mandatory. All full-time employees are eligible to elect ERS or the ORP; employees in teaching, librarian, or coach (including assistant) titles are also eligible for TRS and may choose any of the three plans.
