Paralegal - client services unit

The Criminal Defense Practice of the Legal Aid Society’s Incarcerated Client Services Unit is seeking a Paralegal I for the Incarcerated Persons Hotline (“hotline”).

The Paralegal I will join a new and growing paralegal team and will be responsible for staffing the hotline, a high-volume phone service available to those in city jails and state prisons, as well as their advocates and loved ones.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Answer incoming calls from people in city jails and state prisons, including psychiatric units, as well as their advocates and loved ones
  • Perform hotline intakes for incarcerated people and their families, including problem solving and connecting people to services as needed
  • Interview and assess requests for services from incarcerated persons from hotline calls or other referrals.
  • Track and report data and trends gathered through hotline intake
  • Prepare written reports summarizing information compiled
  • Perform data entry
  • Provide general guidance or information to callers about the Department of Corrections administrative procedures and processes and help connect callers to the appropriate services
  • Assemble mailings, litigation files, reports, documents and other materials for attorneys and managers.
  • May require work in the office and in “field” settings such as the New York City jails
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • Eligible candidates must have at least one of the following:
    • A high school diploma / GED
    • At least 2 years of work experience
  • Commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people
  • Excellent writing, verbal, organizational, and computer skills
  • Ability to work in a team setting as well as independently
  • Ability to multitask


Preferred qualifications:

  • Familiarity with New York’s criminal legal system, criminal law, and criminal procedures
  • Experience working with incarcerated people or in correctional facilities
  • Experience working with people affected by trauma
  • Proficiency in Spanish
  • People from impacted communities are encouraged to apply
  • Formerly incarcerated people are encouraged to apply

Salary And Benefits

The salary range represents a good faith estimate of the range we expect to pay for this role. The actual salary offered may vary depending on many factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

Salary Range: $53,295-$81,795

Higher Education and Loan Forgiveness

The Legal Aid Society is a qualified employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness. This position allows an employee to take advantage of PSLF and other State and Federal loan forgiveness programs.
