GLYS provides a safe and positive environment for LGBTQ+ youth to learn more about themselves through peer interaction and educational experiences. The organization creates opportunities for emotional growth and community awareness.
​Through GLYS outreach, other agencies learn about and increase their sensitivity to the needs of gender and sexual minority youth. GLYS provides LGBTQ+ youth with positive role models and a safe space, while promoting positive self-esteem and the integration of these youth into the larger community. GLYS can also assist youth and their families by providing resources and referrals.
Position Summary
The Community and Family Care Coordinator provides direct, affirming support to individuals and families while helping build and sustain inclusive, community-based programs. This role centers relationship-driven care, peer connection, and access to supportive spaces through 1:1 support, community programming, peer support services, and volunteer engagement.
Reports to: Youth Case Manager
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 support to individuals and families, including navigation of resources, emotional support, and referrals as appropriate
- Facilitate and co-facilitate caregiver and family support groups, including preparation, outreach, and follow-up with participants
- Maintain appropriate documentation and follow-up related to support services
- Support the operation of the peer support helpline, including coverage, coordination, and follow-up
- Provide peer-based support consistent with organizational values and best practices
- Assist with training, onboarding, and support of peer support volunteers
- Coordinate and support community-based programs, including family events, drop-in opportunities, and inclusive activities
- Support the homeschool drop-in programming and other community care spaces
- Assist with planning, outreach, and on-site facilitation of programs and events
- Support volunteer recruitment, onboarding, scheduling, and engagement
- Support outreach efforts to connect individuals and families to programs and services

- Experience with and/or passion for issues impacting LGBTQ+ youth
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- New York State Family Peer Advocate credential eligibility preferred (not required)
- Have reliable transportation
- Have experience with team/collaborative work
- Are willing to learn and engage in professional development
- Are creative and able to improvise
- Can attend some evening and weekend programs
