Director, Managing Editorial (Hybrid)

The Corporate Bookmaking division seeks a Director of Managing Editorial supporting the Random House Publishing Group. The division consists of 17 imprints, publishing about 925 titles per year across multiple categories and formats include 1- and 4-color books, original titles, paperback conversions, special account editions, and reissues. The RHPG imprints include Ballantine, Bantam, Dell, Delacorte, Random House, Hogarth, The Dial Press, Modern Library, One World, Harmony, Rodale, Convergent, Del Rey, Random House Worlds, Inklore, and Disney Editions, as well as the Waterbrook and Multnomah imprints of the PRH Christian division.

The Director will be responsible for a staff of 11 (of which 3-4 are direct reports) and supervision of the hiring of additional staff. The position reports to the Vice President, Executive Director of Managing Editorial and Production Editorial.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Analyzes the workings of the department to ensure each imprint has the support and guidance they need from managing editorial.
  • Reviews the current workflows and establishes clear processes for all categories such as 4-color, manga, webcomics, and graphic novels.
  • Collaborates closely with the production editorial, production, interior design, and art departments.
  • Establishes strong relationships with divisional colleagues in Publishing, Editorial, Marketing, Publicity and Legal.
  • Ensures all Bookmaking departments work in unison, focusing on continuous process improvements.
  • Takes an active role in major corporate initiatives such as the launch of an updated project management system and the exploration of improved tools for greater efficiencies in bookmaking.
  • Leads weekly meeting of managing editorial department; jointly leads biweekly managing editorial and production editorial meetings; attends or leads other regular meetings with colleagues in bookmaking, editorial, and publishing.

  • 10+ years of experience in a senior managing editorial role for a major book publisher
  • Proven experience in process improvement and implementation
  • Ability to manage a team, helping them to anticipate problems, troubleshoot solutions, and prioritize projects and initiatives
  • Excellent people management and mentorship skills
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Adobe Acrobat tools, project management tools such as FMP, SAP, and digital workflow
  • Solid knowledge of the overall publishing process from acquisition throughout the entire life cycle of the book

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $115,000 and is commensurate with experience. All positions are currently eligible for an annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.  

This is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).
