Park & Recreation Specialist 2 - (Stewardship Technician) New York City Region
DUTIES:
The Lead Stewardship Technician is a full-time, seasonal position that will assist the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in applying natural resource management principles to stewardship activities within the New York State Parks System. This position is located in the New York City Region. This position is responsible for performing and implementing a variety of environmental stewardship matters on a regional basis and has a wide range of responsibilities. These include implementing on-the-ground environmental stewardship projects, identifying invasive species, identifying native trees and plants, managing threats to biodiversity, responding to regional environmental issues and needs, report writing, data management, ARC GIS map creation, and region wide travel. All of these tasks involve communicating closely with other OPRHP staff and partners. The Lead Stewardship Technician will work under the direct supervision of the Assistant Division Director for Environmental Stewardship, until at such time as a Assistant Environmental Stewardship District Manager is hired, as well as in close coordination with the Regional Director or designee.
Primary responsibilities require coordination and collaboration with; Park staff, Regional staff (capital and biologists) and other Environmental Stewardship staff and include but are not limited to:
- Applying professional skills with a focus on applied environmental stewardship including biodiversity conservation and species and natural community protection within the assigned region.
- Working closely with and aiding the regional management on stewardship activities
- Coordinating and directing field work for the Invasive Species Technician(s)
- Serving as a source of assistance and information for the region on environmental needs and a variety of projects.
- Developing and implementing on-the-ground stewardship plans and projects, including all associated tasks.
- Working closely with regional staff to implement environmental policies, guidelines, principles, and provide specific guidance into daily activities, project development, plans, and actions.
- Working closely with the Division of Environmental Stewardship and Planning on stewardship priorities and related items.
- As assigned by the supervisor, will assist OPRHP capital staff in gathering information for (1) environmental review (SEQRA) and permitting requirements, (2) identification of needs for and assistance with resource inventory and assessment, (and (3) assistance in natural resource planning efforts.
- Maintaining close communication with other staff on matters pertaining to environmental protection and fostering communication throughout the regional offices and facilities.
- Coordinating volunteers for implementing stewardship activities.
- Utilizing NY Natural Heritage Program and other information to guide plans and actions.
- Maintaining innovative ideas and approaches to stewardship within OPRHP facilities.
- Providing input into environmental education and interpretation programs.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of experience in maintenance, construction, landscaping, business operations, park operations, or in an organized recreation program.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A degree in forestry, environmental science, ecology, natural resources management, or a relevant discipline, such as aquatic ecology, conservation biology, etc. One year or more experience with invasive species identification and control methods. Experience with power tools and hand tools and field experience in a conservation biology or a related field.
OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
- Must be able to perform medium to heavy physical labor; must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
- Experience working in an outdoor setting, and willing to work outdoors year-round and in all weather conditions.
- Experience with computer programs, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- A working knowledge of GPS/GIS and ecological monitoring methods
- Ability to work, and maintain a good attitude, while performing physical work in a variety of conditions
- Strong interest in and commitment to environmental stewardship and team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment. If not licensed at the time of appointment, the appointee must obtain a driver’s license without restrictions or conditions within the term of employment.
- Applicants must be willing to travel to NYS Parks throughout the NYC Region and the 5 Boroughs.
